Alright so I am considering buying a ps3 and am just wondering what the going consensus is on that

I own both other next gen systems so the only enticing things are the backwards compatibility (never owned a ps2) and the exclusives being released this year.

I appreciate any input

Buy a PS2. In a year or two, the word "exclusive" will be totally unheard of between the PS3 and 360. It's just too expensive for third parties to not make games for both, and neither Sony nor Microsoft have a very strong first-party development base.

mmm i would wait until after e3 this year because they are going to have to lower the price because ms has already lowered the price in europe and they are bound to in the states as well especially if they announce the new 360 with built in blu ray.

gaming wise on the ps3 at the min there really arent that many decent games drakes uncharted is cool but other than that nothing that you cant buy on a 350 and i don't care what die hard sony fanboy says 3rd party games still look better on the 360 (I do own both so i know)

Yeah, I only really own my PS3 just for its exclusives. Because I own the 40 gig and its not backwards compatible. That doesnt bother me cause I still have my PSX and PS2.
I'm with Eek, buy a PS2 if you want to play PS2 games. There isnt much for the PS3 to really fork out the cash for it.
Plus any "exclusives" that PS3 does get, may or may not be worth it. After all 360 shares about the same if not better games than the PS3 at the moment. I ended up getting one because "it may be a stupid reason for some people" Devil May Cry 4. Although I have a 360, I prefer the PS controller over 360. So, thats the reason I have the 40 gig. I'd prefer the 60 gig but eventually.
Anyways back to the subject. I'd probably wait on it. After all, I cant see the PS3 selling out anytime soon.

Yeah, I think that its probably a good idea just to buy the ps2 and maybe later if the price drops just buy the 40gb ps3 if the games come out to make it worthwhile, thank you for the input though.

I would, the PS2 had such a good library of games.
Is there any PS3 games in particular you're looking forward to?

Final Fantasy XIII is all I can think of, which really puts the whole thing in perspective when you think about it MGS4 would be nice to and it makes me want to play through them all.

I also just hate the ps2 slims they just don't seem sturdy to me, and the old ps2 is harder to find around here.

As much as I love the classic Final Fantasy series, I'm not that excited at XIII but I'll still play it. I'll probably pick up MGS4 but given the end climax of MGS2 I'm not that thrilled. But if the gameplay is solid I'll enjoy it.
The slim PS2s are ok, although very small and yeah I know some people who have broken there's. Just take care of it and it will be ok. As far as the original PS2 I had two that eventually stopped working all together. So I eventually upgraded to the slim. I've had no problems with it.

I'd say go ahead and buy it. I'm still trying to get the money to buy one myself. I like to have all the systems, Mainly due to the fact, when fanboys start going, man I want that, or hah we got this. I can go out and buy whatever games I actually want, instead of staying toward one system. Its like Hookers, why buy one that will only do act, when you can have 3 that will do them all. XD

Sorry, I wanted to do a hooker joke. :(

Chances are, both MGS4 and FFXIII will end up on the 360 in one form or another. There's just too much demand for both, and neither Konami nor SquareSoft have any obligations toward Sony.

The PS2 slims aren't that bad. They're not compatible with the PS2 hard drive though, so you're screwed if you want to play FFXI or the Resident Evil Outbreak games, which need to be installed to avoid unbearable loading times (doesn't help that much). Besides that, the HDD is useless.

They might be a bit flimsier, but that shouldn't be a problem if you don't go tossing it around.

Buy a PS2.

I second that idea. For the amount you would drop on a 3 and a game, you could get a two, a couple of memory cards, multiple controllers, and about 15 really, really good, deep, and absorbing games. I am still buying PS2 games, playing them, and killing lots of time on them. I just picked up Persona 3 Fes, and even though I've already played through the original copy, I'm still loving this game. Persona 4 has been announced for PS2 as well. I'm sure you could ask anybody for suggestions on good PS2 games and we'd all give you a laundry list that would probably last you ten years.

I've never been an early adopter of systems, and I would say that if a system is still pushing $500 then you would be an early adopter for buying it. Hell, I finally went out on a limb and got a 360, and as we speak the face plate and HD are on my shelf, the unit is being serviced. I don't think the PS3 will have such a problem, but still, it's a big investment of mine that isn't even here.

And like everyone else said, MGS4 won't stay exclusive. And I doubt FFXIII will either. I am really excited for both games as I have been a Final Fantasy fan since the NES days (I bought the PS1 just for FFVII). I am not worried about the fact that both games are 'exclusives' because I firmly believe both will migrate to the 360. If they don't, well, it will be far enough down the road that I will be able to afford to buy them along with a PS3.
