Problem solved!

It seems that iTunes has a nifty feature that lets you convert mp3 files into aac! Best of all, it works on the DSi! :-D

It's $170, not $199! So far, from what I've seen in the long run it's not at all mandatory to upgrade - yet. The DSi shop channel, the cameras and the SD card slot could help out on several games in the future. If developers use the hardware effectively, the DSi upgrade will eventually be like upgrading from the DS to the DS Lite.

As for the guys who are giving not so nice remarks about it, if you fiddle around with it for a while, I feel that most of your opinions may change about the thing. Just give it a few months... you'll see. ;-)

I dont really like the upgrades they have done like the music player, camera, and the fact that they took off the GBA slot. But it's going to have a virtual console to buy Game boy games so that alone makes me want it.

Here I go posting on TGH from my DSi.

The DSi browser is >>>>> psp browser.

And it seems to be > wii browser.

Well at least when I finally buy one of those damn contraptions I'll be able to listen to music, my only question is, why can't it play MP3's? I don't think that would have been too much to ask.

C'mon Nintendo... WTF man?

I thought gb/gbc/gba games were confirmed, now they "haven't talked about it"? WTF?!

Friend codes aren't that bad, they just aren't that good. So keeping them neither solves the problem nor makes it worse...

There is one, for the JPN region. (i'm not sure about Europe)

I like how they threw Mother 3 at him.

So appeasing the fanbase, nintendo's loyal customers is not a priority...

But I already have a DSi, and i'm satisfied on their improvements.
So this article can't affect my opinion on buying it, because I already have it.

When they Wii came out, the originally did support the MP3 codec. Sometime last year, though, they switched, with an update, to make it so it used AAC instead.

Making the Wii and DSi compatible, in this manner, would mean that the DSi would be AAC only too. I'm not entirely sure why they did it, though.

Wow... that just seems like terrible marketing strategy on Nintendo's part. I see no reason to get the DSi if one already has a DS. The extras just aren't really worth it.

So you are pissed off that they took off a feature that allowed you to play your GBA games, but are okay with the fact that they'll charge you to play those exact same games on its "Virtual Console?" :zomgz:

Soo I do have a question as well. Why would anyone want a DSi if they have games that use the GBA Port as well as the ds Port? Like the Guitar hero game?

I agree with beeslo. You have a stack of 40 GBA Games, that you can play on DS or Ds Lite. You can also play most DS games, and those ds games that require the GBA slot as well. You can also play that stack of 40 + GBA Games. Instead of buying them of the DSi Store for 10 bucks apiece. Sure convience is fun and all, but are you going to pay 250 + dollars to play games you already have a copy of, for a digital one. THe only way I would think it would be a good idea is if they had some process to let you renew your GBA Games for a Digital Download. Then it would be a good trade off.

God forbid people who have GBA games would still own a GBA, GBA Player, or DS that could still play the games they own.

The service, just like Virtual Console on the Wii, is for, obviously, games you don't already own.

Screw that though. If they really wanted to entice people they would offer SNES games for download. I would jump on that pretty quickly. Super Metroid where ever I go? Sign me up. Wow. I can play GameBoy games that don't really hold up too well these days? Woo hoo?

I could be wrong, but I don't think that mp3 is a free format.
I know OGG is a free format.

That and AAC was designed to be the successor of the MP3 format, because AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at many different bit rates.

Let wikipedia spell out the ways they are different, in aac format's favor...
Spoiler
> More sample frequencies (from 8 kHz to 96 kHz) than MP3 (16 kHz to 48 kHz)

> Up to 48 channels (MP3 supports up to two channels in MPEG-1 mode and up to 5.1 channels in MPEG-2 mode)

> Arbitrary bit-rates and variable frame length. Standardized constant bit rate with bit reservoir.

> Higher efficiency and simpler filterbank (rather than MP3's hybrid coding, AAC uses a pure MDCT)

> Higher coding efficiency for stationary signals (AAC uses a blocksize of 1024 samples, allowing more efficient coding than MP3's 576 sample blocks)

> Higher coding accuracy for transient signals (AAC uses a blocksize of 128 samples, allowing more accurate coding than MP3's 192 sample blocks)

> Can use Kaiser-Bessel derived window function to eliminate spectral leakage at the expense of widening the main lobe

> Much better handling of audio frequencies above 16 kHz

> More flexible joint stereo (different methods can be used in different frequency ranges)

> Adds additional modules (tools) to increase compression efficiency: TNS, Backwards Prediction, PNS etc... These modules can be combined to constitute different encoding profiles.

So we could be seeing the begining of the moving away from mp3s all together and adapting aac as the new main format, like we did with wavs back in the day.

I shall play the devil's advocate here and defend the dsi in an otherwise totally opposing thread...

Backwards compatable vs (music capabilities[with greatest visualization ever], greater use of the microphone, camera capabilities, photo editing capabilities, larger screens, free easy to use internet browser, rainbow pen in pictochat, SD card slot, greater processing power, and an ever growing downloadable library of new applications and games. [they even give ya 1000 points for free to start off with])

Image
"This isn't just a few additions... It's a spoony SMEG LOAD of additions!"

I know you guys are a little peeved about the missing gba slot, but... vs all the new improvements?
Get over it!

Besides if you already have a DS/DSlite what are you complaining about? This isn't women we are talking about... You don't have to only choose one!

If you aren't going to get it, that's fine, and if you are... welcome to the club.
(we don't have jackets but wii will soon) (j/k)

How'd I do?

So Instead of just carrying a DS with some DS games and a few GBA Games, I now have to Carry a GBA/DS with a DSlite some GBA/Ds games. Thats real fun :-?.
