Do we really need a new Sega console?

I’ll get this out of the way first. The Dreamcast was awesome. I bought one at launch and still have it. I, along with most people had a strong feeling that the console wasn’t long for the world and that effected my purchasing decisions with it. I really threw my support behind it by trying to purchase first party games that (at the time) pushed the envelope. Games like Seaman and Space Channel 5 weren’t that fun but I appreciated what Sega was doing, and showed my appreciation by purchasing these games the first week they were released. Bottom line on the Dreamcast is that in spite of its short life span it provided more than enough quality titles to justify its existence.

With all of that being said I don’t think we need another Sega console. What purpose would another console have? Sure the Dreamcast provided some nice innovations for its time like online play, the VMU and some unique add-ons like the Seaman microphone, the Bass fishing pole and the Samba de Amigo maraca but it was the software that made the system great. I don't see what Sega could bring to the console market today except more splintering.

Today we have the opportunity to play Sega games on all platforms and the once promising thought of playing Sonic on a Nintendo system has diminished greatly due to disappointing ports and a general lack of software innovation. Quick, name five awesome non-Dreamcast ports that Sega has released in the 5 years that they’ve been releasing multiplatform games. I can’t.

The public didn’t have enough trust in Sega to support a fantastic and ahead of its time system like the Dreamcast. There is even less support for Sega now. As nice of a dream as it is, Sega the publisher isn’t up to snuff anymore. No one will buy a two hundred fifty plus dollar console for a new Sonic game.

Sega needs to focus on making innovative and quality software before they think about jumping back into the hardware market.

If Nintendo can do it, why not Sega...Hell Atari wants to put TPM chips on your motherboard for piracy prevention...The point being: They can try, but if they succeed is another story.

why shouldnt they make another system?

if they had a really good piece of hardware from themselves, there would be no possible way they would let their first party software be bad. I think that the quality control of software would greatly improve.

or maybe the sega fanboy in me is coming out after years of being dormant.

The more competition, the better it is for us consumers. I don't know if we need a new Sega console but I would definitely be happy if they did come out with another one. Sega Saturn is one of the best consoles of all time, to me at least. I don't think they would survive in todays market though.

Whether or not the diehard Sega fans want a new console from them it still comes down to whether or not the company can support one. Last I heard the company isn’t doing all that well and recently had some layoffs. A lot of their more recent successful outings have been with Nintendo, so going off on their own doesn’t really seem to make much business sense. Confidence in Sonic isn’t exactly high, and while Sega may have plenty of good IPs in their vault that’s always been their flagship obviously, and if that can’t get going it doesn’t bode well for the company as a whole.

So while a new Sega console might please some people and add some more competitive spice, Sega is still a company and there’s no way I can see them pulling it off. If they couldn’t keep the Dreamcast afloat how are they supposed to succeed now?

they should really just create the 2d powerhouse that the saturn was supposed to be. that always sounded like such an awesome idea to me.

i love the saturn as it turned out but i think it would have been so much more cool as a really powerful 2d machine.

To be honest, three is enough. An Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo console are all we need.

As much as I love Sega, I don't think they are in a position to make another console. Heck, when your title character appears on every other system I think its fair to say the console days are over. They built there own financial hole by trying to support so many systems at once. It is sad that more people didn't buy the Dreamcast, but Sony was the powerhouse at the time.

Even without a console, their is no reason why Sega can't return to its former glory. Sonic and the Secret Rings, though not perfect, showed that Sonic could be revitalized, and so far Unleashed is looking interesting. The new Nights game was a huge disappointment, and could have easily been more polished. If anything, Sega needs to heighten their quality control. You can't tell me with a straight face that people played Sonic Next Gen and felt that it wasn't half a finished game.

I loved the DC but I think segas console making days are a thing of the past, and its probaly best that way, let them go out with thier head held high with the dreamcast knowing they made a good system rather then come back with the dreamcast 2.0 2009 megasuperulta system which sucks balls and they go out on a downer.

while its not really a "sega" game I would love to see a sequel , or maybe even a port / remake of blue stinger - I absolutely loved this game.

Dreamcast didn't make it because SEGA never had enough capital in the first place to withstand competition(lost it all to saturn and 32x and CD). Their first-to-the-market tactic and marketing was supposed to be building up their treasury for competition. It was a risky gamble and they lost. Not to mention that Sega America and Sega Japan was hellbent on killing off each other in the last decade, if they can't even control their international hq's then they more than game quality problems on their hands.

SEGA had really bad business practices, and the lack of resources pushed them to the pit. Tbh, it's going to be this way for quite awhile.

I wouldn't mind SEGA returning to the console war.... but its not really necessary. I'm fine with what we have now.

first let sega make a great controlling sonic game....like the first few weeks of unleashed
then maybe just maybe have a crack at another console??...

sega makes fairly good games now, if only they would revive more classics it'll be all good ^^

It was a powerful 2D machine at its time, just look at its huge roster of 2D fighters and how much better they turned out than similar ports to PlayStation. Its big disadvantage was not handling 3D graphics that well, which is Western gamers were most concerned with in the mid 90s (and since).

As for the prospect of a new Sega system, I'd really like one just because of my fondness for the Dreamcast and my disappointment at its untimely demise. I'd like them to be able to have another go and hopefully survive this time. But right now it just doesn't seem feasible for them.

LMAO XD

Anyway, I would definitely like Sega to come back into the console market. They need to reinvnt their classic titles that have been neglected, and just start afresh.

As it stands now, Sega doesn't have the sort of in-house developers it had for success back in the Genesis days. We should appreciate the Genesis for what it did and what it has brought in the way of game collections and download services on modern consoles, but the golden age is long over.

It's not going to happen.

Sega should hook up with Dimps and make some more 2-D fighting games, or maybe have Camelot make a new Shining Force game for them, because that's about the best thing they have going for them these days.
