What is all this talk about "Bad Teachers?" Is there this widespread epidemic with awful teachers infecting our schools? We all know teachers are underpaid and have one of the hardest and most thankless jobs, you know educating the future of America. But woah we can't give them all a raise because that means the bad ones would get a reward too!

You don't hear anyone blaming bad bankers for the economy, or bad doctors for healthcare problems, or bad cops for crime. Could you imagine the uproar if someone said cops shouldn't get a raise because some are crooked? Hell I'm more afraid of bad cops than bad teachers, they have guns.

:-o

It makes me mad that teachers get pushed around and put down so often.

If your job doesn't pay you enough, you quit, you don't just choose to not do your job. Where the hell else would this be okay!?
This is like saying, "I'm not paid enough for delivering packages, so I'm going to not drop them all off and just toss them in a canyon along the way."

To note, most of the threads about it around here, lately, have been about college professors and instructors, whom you directly pay out of your pocket, not from tax money. So, yeah, they should be doing a better job.

I agree they're not getting paid enough, but the only way less pay = worse teachers is when they don't have the money to train the teacher the subject material they may need ... not in the attitude and demeanor of the instructor and how they handle situations in the course or their teaching method. Those things are entirely dependent on them, regardless of pay.

I guess that is the idea. If we could just get all those teachers to quit, then we could hire new inexperienced teachers who would work for a lower pay grade. And while we are at it get hire on some other people who aren't even certified in education to teach. Not sure how any of that would improve the quality of education, but it would make it cost less.

But back to my original point. When was this poll taken where teachers said they were going to quit trying to do a good job? Was there a study done over this at Pepperdine which revealed these findings? Or did someone just remember not liking their 6th grade teacher and now they assume all 6th grade teachers are bad?

I have yet to see any proof to back up any of this yet everyone acts like it is common knowledge.

I have experienced a bad teacher, let me give you an idea of what it was like.

Ok, so the subject was Spanish I, not so bad. I was enjoying my teacher, because she taught us well enough so that the subject came naturally to us. only about 5 weeks into school, my ENTIRE CLASS was transferred to a different teacher, with no say in the matter. I really didn't understand why this was necessary, but whatever, maybe the new teacher wouldn't be so bad (ROFLCOPTER).

The new teacher hardly went over some material, focused on stuff that we weren't supposed to focus on yet (because we weren't at that point in the book), gave us quizzes a LOT more frequently, and quizzed us on stuff that she didn't go over. We never even had reviews before tests. At one point, she started giving us sheets to study from for the upcoming quizzes, and said to study those sheets because that's what we'd be quizzed on. Quiz comes, aaaaaannd bullshit. I studied the fucking papers every time before the quizzes, and there was shit on them every time that we didn't go over in class, and said shit wasn't even on the fucking study papers.

At that point I was fucking pissed. I could easily see my grades slipping in the class, and there was nothing I could fucking do to improve said grade, because I was studying as much as possible, and that didn't even help. I had 100% in everything with my first teacher, and I got B's on damn near every paper with the second one. Hell, on the quizzes, we got marked down for being textbook-perfect because that was "not what she wanted to see" on our quizzes.

"How could this happen?" I wondered, and then I looked back a bit more on how she taught us. Whenever we were doing activities in the textbook, and we came across a word that we didn't know, she told us to look the fucking words up ourselves. Yes, this teacher used the "let's throw everybody in the water, and at least one or two of these fuckers will find out how to keep themselves alive so we can work those poor bastards harder than ever" method. The scary part of the class was seeing everybody else around me who also got 100% on everything with the previous teachers get scores like 4/17 or 10/17 typically on quizzes and activities 'most every day.

Now, I didn't really hate the teacher, because she was a nice person and all, but I was pissed at the fact that I wasn't doing well in the class, because getting straight A's or not was the defining element on whether I got to see a Christmas that year or not. Hopefully that helps give you an idea.

The trend I noticed is people aspiring to be teachers are getting dumber. Obtaining a University degree is way too easy these days and getting a upper level education degree is a joke. A lot of the country doesn't even require upper level degrees as a requirement for employment. Even in math and the sciences I've noticed this. People now become teachers as like a fall back profession. I've talked to some of the worst students in college and they all wanted to be were teachers. Some have even gotten bonuses up front to transfer to areas like Las Vegas and areas in Florida to teach. If you went to college in like the last 10 years you have to admit the requirements are becoming more and more lax. This fear of classes growing beyond 30 students is maddening. The population is growing but qualified teachers are dwindling so we lower standards to address the problem. This idea that everyone has to get a college degree is insane. Some people arent meant to go to college unfortunately. Now they're taking money to teach in cities with existing educational problems and are perpetuating a growing epidemic.

I can't agree with the underpaid part because teachers where I'm from can make upwards of about 100,000 dollars, a lot of the time higher. There's a big problem with our school district set up that causes this and is difficult to explain. Also these jobs are plauged by nepotism so they're difficult to obtain and lower the standard of teacher. The national average for teacher salary is like 45,000 anyway excluding health benefits and can make more with overtime they also dont work 12 months a year.

Document it then, take the NOTES FROM HELL, maybe even audio if thats allowed in the classes before the quiz starts. Then when the quiz happens and nothing was covered before it, you can confront the teacher.

If that doesn't work, is there any finals from past years that you would be able to get a hold of and go over?
