Forum rules

Rules

1. All normal forum rules apply.

2. NO JOKES! This isn't the topic for funny pictures or wise ass remarks.

3. Serious topics need to be well thought out when written, they also need to have well thought out replies. Please try to write more than a single sentence. Back up your opinion with facts or something else.

4. Keep a cool and calm head, especially about things such as politics, gay rights, religion, etc. People are allowed to have differing opinions than you, please don't view them as personal attacks, please don't start any sort of major drama or get all offended here. In the end, we're all friends still.

5. Use common sense when posting in here, which simply means ask yourself if this is something really worth posting, are you intentionally being mean to someone, if your topic is ridiculously controversial (IE. Baby Eating), are you accidentally bashing Christianity on Easter Day, etc.

6. In your posts, please try to clarify whether you're speaking based on fact or personal experiences as it will lead to less misunderstandings. Please do not state opinions as if they were facts without proof to back it up.

7. NO DRUNK POSTING.

Failure to comply with any of these rules (additional rules may be added in the future as needed) will result in a warning or perhaps a banning from the 'Why So Serious?' sub-forum. The severity of the punishment works in tandem with the severity of your actions.

Actually, f*** that. If you did that in America, you'd probably win the stupid lawsuit.
Genius! :-o

I think swear words are mainly Anglo-Saxon words that were seen as 'vulgar' by the 'educated' people. They were just normal words, but I think they were seen as common by the French (I think it was them, I may be wrong). Another reason why it's stupid to get all holier than thou about it.

Actually, Blue is right about this one. Most vulgar words derive from a mixture of the two Old English dialects. The Saxon aspect being that of civility, you saw a split in the language.

Anglo - Shit = Saxon - Defecate
Anglo - Fuck = Saxon - Copulate
Anglo - Piss = Saxon - Urinate

These are only a few examples, but the Saxon influence is indeniable. If you look at the Saxon words, they are very much French in origin whereas the Anglo have very Germanic roots.
Its funny that this split in language actually lends itself to why some words are considered vulgar.

I think there is, but only a select few. Things like cunt will just always be bad. It's a vulgar term for a woman's vagina. How could a word like this ever be integrated into daily conversations?

But then there are words like shit or damn. The thing with shit is that there is a "not bad" version of the word, and that's crap. Crap is tossed around in 4th grade conversations, when it means the EXACT same thing as shit (feces, in case you were wondering). Its the same thing with damn, we use dang and darn like its nothing, why not damn? I wish words like this were integrated into conversations, then I would have to worry about accidentally dropping an S-bomb when having dinner with my girlfriends parents (but, of course, if I used a certain synonym all would have been good).

This word and the fact that it seems so damn offensive always kind of made me laugh. I mean, it's essentially nothing more than a slang term for vagina.
As a dude I never found the words dick or cock to be particularly offensive, so why the hell do chicks get all bent out of shape over "cunt"?

Women have this funny hang-up about being viewed as an object, or boiled down to a body part. We schlongs don't mind as much, IMO. (On the contrary... we glorify it.)

Well its just the fact that it means vagina. I could have included dick or cock into that sentence, just because I can't picture slang terms for sex organs getting integrated into conversations.

Cunt just has a very negative connotation to it. Its just very abrasive sounding and 99% of the time is used in a rather hateful or derogatory manner. "Dick" or "Cock" isn't always used in a negative manner and like John said above, we are rather proud of the names we give to our members.

Well, everyone swears (even Weird Al Yankovic, and he NEVER swears in his songs). I have no problem with it because I myself swear too. I think it would only be considered horrible if something personal was brought up in the swear, like religion for example.

I try to avoid swearing too much, as it becomes bland very quickly. Swearing can be funny if used creatively, and I sometimes use it do express displeasure or bewilderment. But people who say "fucking" after every word just come across as being uneducated.

Vulgarities change though over time

Humbug
Breast
Thigh

were all considered vulgarities in the 19th century.

I don't swear around my kids, but when I used to drink (and I drank heavy), I would curse like a drunk sailor. It doesn't bother me at all when people swear, but I don't like it when they do it while they are standing next to my kids at the park or they come to my house and curse up a storm around my kids or the little bastards riding bikes around my cul-de-sac swearing just to say the words ex. "Fuck billy you pussy 'very nice gay man'" and that is an actual quote from the kid across the street while my 5, 3 and 1 year old are standing there with their jaws on the ground from what they just heard. Even my 5 and 3 year old know what words you just don't run around screaming for the hell of it. So what I'm saying is, swear all you want, just don't do it where my kids can hear it.
