I was wondering about this when I heard that there was going to be a global Dota Championship. Now for most of you that don't know Dota is a user created map on Warcraft III that has just taken the world of competitive gaming. Now some of you might think wtf does this have to do with the Olympics? The event is being organized to kick off the games in China. Now this is great because the world might look at this and maybe take more interest in games as a form competition instead of just something to kill time.

I often wonder why some sports take too long to make it on the Olympic sports "standard". Hell snowboarding took so long and they world had it about 20+ years. Skateboarding is still trying to make it on that list and MMA has taken an application. How much longer till we see an olympic gold medal on a gamer? I would really like to be alive to see that happen.

Check this video out and you might get a better idea of the gameplay

I thought Olympics was a test of strength, stamina, grace, and pushing the human body to it's limits. No offense, but I don't think video games are cut out for the Olympics. Yes, it may depend on fast reflexes and split second decisions, but so do a lot more worthy sports, and, hell, maybe a lot more worthy board games as well.

I agree completely. Video games don't belong in the Olympics.
However, a kind of Olympics only for video games would be nice :-)

Video games at the Olympics? If video gaming was accepted as an Olympic sport, it would be a giant slap in the face of all the real athletes out there. If I ever see an unathletic fat ass who can't run 10 feet without collapsing gasping for air get a gold medal for being really good at a FPS, it will be a sad day. Hey, I love video games too, but c'mon the Olympics? If Fatal1ty can get a gold medal just like Jesse Owens can get a gold medal, to mention both their names in the same sentence is sacrilege. At that point, instead of giving athletes a gold medal, just give them a glass of milk that I just dipped my nuts into. It would be the same thing.

Video gaming has enough tournaments anyway. Just let gamers stick to those.

While i do believe that Video Games have no place in the Olympics, it really won't surprise me if in the future they actually make it into them.

Let's remember that there are a lot of activities that are considered sports and don't require much more skill than any video game needs, like archery or chess. They require skills, yeah, but they hardly "push the body to its limits".

Im not trying to say that I WANT video games as an event but I am trying to say that they are staging the DOTA event as a way to unite a different genre of people from around the world. I know that most people would be sickened if they made games an Olympic "sport" but they're tons more sports that should be hands down considered for events. If I recall it right tons of Olympic enthusiast were angered by the idea that an "extreme" sport was included in the winter part of the Olympics.

So why is it not possible for something that is played world wide not included on their list? I'm damn sure that someone that has devoted their life to a martial art hasn't just studied one discipline so why isn't MMA? Hell they have curling and all it really is brooming a path on ice for a rock. If they added gaming to the Olympics it would be hated on just like any other new thing and soon will be forgotten just like the Olympics have been.

I say if you want to have an Olympic style event for gamers why not make it at the beginning of the event. Not necessarily as part of the sports but just as an opening event to just showcase that the world competes at other things that don't involve steroids and sweat.
At least the only thing the gamer event has to worry about is the amount of caffine in the person system during gameplay.

I think video game tournaments are all based on memorization, rather than skill and luck...

So seeing Video Games at the Olympics would be difficult to produce, no mater what the game, considering hacking could be used so the favorable [home] team wins.

Well they could check the equipment before using. "searching for hacks" or mods wouldn't be any different from those drugs and steroids tests.
