has anybody else played this game yet?

I was looking for a new RPG to sink my teeth into and I found this one at walmart and thought what the hell why not. it is a pretty interesting game, it is very derivative but in a good way.

it feels like a mash up of skyrim and dragon age origins with a really great combat system like god of war / castlevania lords of shadow / SW force unleashed etc, this is the first open world RPG I have played with a deep and engaging combat system, its fantastic and adds so much to the game.

the world, the map, the fast travel etc all remind me of skyrim and the dialogue options / quests all remind of me something along the lines of Dragon age.

I am definitely digging this game a ton, its an interesting world, interesting story and absolutely fantastic gameplay for an RPG, plus you can change your class on the fly at anytime by visiting an NPC, you can go from straight warrior to straight mage or a rogue mage or anything in between.

It just struck me as bland and generic. Between Skyrim and Mass Effect 3, there isn't room for another RPG in my life right now. Oh and Diablo III comes out in May so yeah.

Pretty much what Fox said, but when it drops to $20 I'm going to check it out for sure. The combat sounds kick-ass

I picked it up day one because of the taint of hats, and the combat flows really well. It looks really nice and all that shit, but I just cant get into it. It really wants to be a multiplayer game, and it suffers from being only singleplayer. Also, I have no idea what is going on in it so I only have like 2 hours played.
I never even used those hats either.

I am not very far into the main story but have spent about 20 hours doing side quests and 2 of the 5 faction ( guild) quest lines, and I must say I am really into this game, I am actually finding I prefer it to Skyrim, which may sound crazy but I just love the feel of the world with every area feeling unique, one area is a forest, one is a swap with bridges connecting islands, one is a valley infested with spiders and everything is covered in webs where as skyrim the entire game felt like pinetrees & snow, plus it doesn't hurt its a colorful game, I miss color.

I do see what you mean, It does feel like it could very easily be a MMO, but I dont think it suffers from being single player at all, in fact I more or less hate most mutliplayer games and I probably would have never even looked at this game if it was MP.

I don't want it to be massively multiplayer so much as co-op.

I've enjoyed what I've played of Amalur so far, being about 10 hours in or so, however I do find the characters (so far) to be very bland and uninteresting, but the game very much feels like Fable in how it plays for me, and I enjoy it far more than those games, (although I will always love Fable: The Lost Chapters for its time, and Fable II was still very good though)

Played it for the shit in ME3, so I rushed through the demo. That being said, I did a lot of cool stuff, like slaughter an entire town and other neat things just for the heck of it. It reminds me of Fable, if Fable placed any value on the leveling system and a Bioware-esque plot.

I played the demo last weekend. While the combat and leveling are awesome, the story is terrible. I think it would be a fun game to co-op with my girlfriend but as a single-player game I can't see myself investing dozens of hours into it. I just don't find it as immersive as Skyrim. If they focused on a having a strong story AND awesome gameplay I would be in heaven.

This is seriously like comparing, I dunno... Double Dragon to a Dynasty Warriors game. Of course it's not going to be anywhere near as complex with it's story telling, they're on totally different levels.

Yes I know, but Zombies was saying he preferred it to Skyrim and I had to disagree as I find it very immersive where Kingdoms has very solid gameplay but I can't find a hook which would make me want to play it for 40+ hours. Sucks because I'm very much a gameplay over story gamer (I seriously don't understand people who enjoy extremely bland gameplay but good story in videogames) but if you're going to have an extremely time-consuming game you need to have a strong story to match.

I'm having a real hard time getting into and staying with this game. Which is funny because I've spent 30 hours in it. The main thing is, that those 30 hours have seemed like a chore. While the combat and levelling are well done, KoA seems to think because it's an RPG it needs to a have a billion sidequests. Many of the sidequests are poorly written fetchquests.

The dialogue is pretty awful too. Instead of being immersive and making you feel like you're having a conversation, it just infodumps everything. They don't even try to mask it. You get options that literally say: "Fae" or "War". Also for an open world game, there isn't much going on the open world.

Pretty much what BuddyBaker said. Like I said previously, I'm very much a gameplay>story when it comes to gaming (because why are you into gaming if you don't like good gameplay). But if you're playing a huge RPG and sinking dozens of hours into it you really need to have a good story or at least immersion. I didn't get that feeling at all. I hope for the sequel they focus on making a better narrative.

I think they've laid some solid groundwork for a future sequel. If they can get a good narrative and have a character that actually feels like a character instead of an blank slate, then it would be far better. Right now, it just feels like a Fable/God of War hybrid with MMO trappings.

More like DA:O. The warden was a complete blank slate but through dialogue/party interaction it actually became your own character. In KoA all you do is ask infodumps.
