Hey guys, I am trying to get some poll data for an article I am working on for my Xbox 360 column. I'm trying to gauge how the general gaming community feels about achievements. Please vote on the poll and share your opinion as well.

I loved achievements. I hate trophies.

Seriously, what the fuck are trophies? Some stupid bullshit, that's what.

I like achievements and will try to get them, but if they are impossibly hard or I just feel like I'm done with the game I usually just stop playing.

I like achievements. I'll try to get as many in a game as I can, but sometimes they're more trouble than their worth. If I can get over 500G in a game then I'm satisfied. But I do have to say, after getting 1000G (or 200G) since there's not a number attached to it, continuing to play or exploring the rest of the game is less compelling.

They're an okay little bonus, but they're absolutely no substitute for actual rewards you can use in the game you earn them in.

They add a lot of replay value and extra incentive to go back and further explore the world, beat it at a higher difficulty, or play the game in a totally new manner. Some are annoying, poorly implemented, or just such a grind that they aren't worth the trouble. But hey they are totally optional so if the achievements $uck then I just don't bother with them.

If I truly love a game I'll make an effort to get all the achievements, but that's a rare occurrence. I don't usually go out of my way to get them though. A handy thing is that comparing achievements can be an easy way to check how far somebody else is in a game.

I think they're a pretty cool thing, though I really don't go out of my way to get them. However, properly implemented achievements will make the challenge reasonable and give you an incentive to go back. But if the game says something like "Kill 1000 guys from doing a specific melee attack", then I have no reason to do it.

This too. They make a second playthru much more interesting and rewarding and give you a reason to go above and beyond just "beating the game"

I kinda like them, I guess. I don't really bother actually gunning for the achievements in a game but it's a pretty simple and silly yet effective way for a game to pat me on the back when I do something bananas. It's more or less a first playthrough kind of thing for me. I won't pick a game back up again for the sake of achievements.

I like it, that's why I got a Nike+ Fuel Band to motivate me when I work out. Shit, If an achievement would help me reach near invincibility in a game, it'll quadruple my activeness for sure.

I dunno. Originally I think they were a good idea. But they're more or less mandatory in all games today which is IMO kind of dumb. When they first came out they added a sort of meta game aspect to a game. "Beat the boss using only a melee" weapon, that kind of thing. But over time all devs jumped on the whole achievements thing. Which means many of them are doing it out of necessity instead of inspiration. Thus you get dumb achievements like "kill 100 enemies with a shotgun". What have you achieved? You do virtual chores really well? It's not a reward for your skill, that's for sure. Just something for OCD completionists. Which is fine, I guess. But it has me really turned of to the whole idea.

Carry a fuckin' gnome through HL2. Now that's an achievement!

I like them a lot. I find myself going back and replaying games to get more achievements. I don't typically aim to get all of them in every game, but it's a title I absolutely love then I'll aim for 1000 gamer points.

The option for me isn't there. I'm all for achievements, really. It's always nice to do things you wouldn't normally do in order to get an achievement, like Parachuting from on top a tower and glide to the river. It's a fun little distraction and it ads to the overall experience. And, when you have a game like Assassin's Creed II, where most of the achievements come naturally, it's easy to just lose yourself in trying to get a platinum by going after the final two or three achievements.

Buuuuuuuut, I think that some achievements are too ridiculous, are too difficult and just ruin the fun out of the game. So, it's a mixed bag. Though, I do love the humor that can be put in to situations by achievement titles.

Achievements do a lot of different things...

- They add humor with witty taglines or photos or injokes... (sort of like forum ranks.)
- They add more to do in the game beyond what there normally is to do.
- They sometimes add challenge, or even TEACH you about cool things you can do that aren't included in the tutorials.
- They add replay value to some games, or even better they add a whole new experience to classic retro games with this added meta-game.
- Are sometimes tied into with unlocking actual in-game content, like with Dead Rising.

Some of the downsides are...

- They "make" you use guides/walkthroughs to collect various items, something that has been in most games since GTA3's Secret Packages.
- You can find yourself getting burnt out on the game if you're trying for a particular achievement... IE. Not dying at all throughout the entire game, etc. and doing dumb tricks like quitting every time you're about to die, or keeping multiple save slots, or quicksaving every 5 seconds, etc. all for a dumb achievement.
- Make the game more challenging if you're attempting things on your first playthrough, and thus making you not enjoy the game as much.

I forgot to mention some of the achievements that come with perks. Like getting a gamerpic or a theme those I love unlocking.
