So this could very well end up being a large post but I feel the need to express my reasons for disliking Skyward Sword as much as I do. Firstly in no way would I rate it above - Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker or Twilight Princess for that matter, as incredible as the gameplay can be at times, it can also be infuriatingly inaccurate which can make some enemies a chore to fight more so than previous games, but my biggest issue with the game, is the layout of the world, I cannot stand the chore of having to fly so often in the clouds to get to only THREE different over worlds, even if they expand later on, including arguably one of the most beautiful areas crafted in the Sand Sea (the seamless transition of sand sea to ocean is amazing) but for me only having those three extremely disconnected regions kills the immersion for me, and while given that this is the VERY BEGINNING of Hyrule given it isn't even called Hyrule yet, I can understand no human settlements, but having only four-five of those woodland imps or 3-4 of the mountain creatures that dig underground, the lack of any villages or settlements is off putting too, it's that lack of an over world that is connected and seamless transitions (which was perfect in Twilight Princess and relatively strong in Wind Waker) that makes those two my favorites of the series, and Ocarina and Majora also rated so highly among the 3D iterations, but I simply can't get past that issue in Skyward Sword.

But nonetheless, the gameplay as I said, can both be fantastic with motion controls, and also a chore, it has some of the best boss fights in recent memory, but some painfully easy ones as well (always a mix of good and bad in the series bosses) and some enemies are always enjoyable to fight, and not to mention that it has some truly fantastic dungeons, but also some mediocre ones, (The boss battle and introduction it for the Sandship a highlight!) but as good as the gameplay can be, the immersion of the game's world is what ultimately I've loved about Zelda games, and as good as the story of Skyward Sword is, I still rate Wind Waker and Twilight as having better stories and overarching plotlines, which as I've kept mentioning, is what I love about the series.

I want to love Skyward Sword, I just can't shake the sense that it really does not deserve to be considered 'the best' of Zelda. and while no individual game in the series could ever be crowned the best, I do feel as though Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are better games. I hope my thoughts were worth reading and offer a different perspective than most journalists who revere it as a crowning achievement in the series, because for me, it just leaves out too many aspects that 'complete' a Zelda game for me, at the expense of the brilliant motion controls (albeit still flawed at times)

I am now playing through skyward sword, and I feel almost the exact opposite of lucrious,

I love the the flying, it sort of reminds me of the sailing in wind waker but done right, its less time consuming, less boring, and seems generally more involved, I love the 3 different over worlds that are basically dungeons in and of them selves full of puzzles and enemies, it really feels like they combined the sailing of wind waker with a traditional zelda over world albeit several smaller ones rather than one large one

the combat and the controls are superb, I wasnt too sure about the motion plus thing but it works great, every fight you have to put thought into it and figure out the enemies tactics and approach them all differently, it works very well and keeps you really engaged, I never had many problems with it not picking up what I wanted to do, there may have been 1 or 2 instances where I got hit a time or 2 when it didnt hit the way i told it to, but I didn't find it to be too much of a hassle.

the dungeons and puzzles in this game are top notch, I have not been this involved in Zelda puzzles in a long long time, especially the puzzles involving the beetle, bombs, or a combo of both, the bosses are all pretty awesome too, the characters seem a lot more fleshed out, link seems more alive too rather than just sitting there staring off into the distance whenever link talks to someone or explains something to someone he emotes and moves his hands, it feels like he is really talking to and interacting with these people., zelda's character is also done perfectly in this game, every time link and zelda almost meet back together only to get pulled apart I cant help but feel a little sad for the 2 of them.

I love the villain, I wasn't sure how I would feel about this guy, but he has a ton of personality and character and that makes for a very interesting villain.

and lastly, when they first showed the early videos and images of the game I was very underwhelmed with the graphical direction, however after playing the game for some time now, I absolutely love it, the graphics find the absolute perfect balance between the realism of twilight princess, the feel of ocarina of time, and the cartoon look of wind waker, this is IMO the best looking zelda game yet and a direction I really hope they keep in the future.

is skyward sword the best Legend of Zelda game? I don't know if I could call skyward sword the best zelda game, but I can definitively say that this is the most fun I have had playing a zelda game since Link to the past, and that skyward sword is my favorite Zelda game next to Link to the Past.

After beating it I felt satisfied there were a lot of things I liked about it. The first boss fight you get to do with Ghiraham gave me goosebumps that I haven't felt in awhile while fighting a boss in any other game. There are the small things like when falling at the beginning with the sail cloth was a bit maddening. Until later on you don't even have to worry about releasing the sail cloth unless it's when your flying around in the sky and you land on a particular island. So every time you get go to the ground you don't have to deploy the sail cloth at all it does it automatically. That was mainly my complaint with the game and it's very minor. Oh also the first time you get bombs and it had you preform a rolling throw I had a real hard time doing them. Until I noticed that you had to literally point the wii mote to the ground and it'll work no problem.

The rest of the game was really good the ending of the game I wouldn't put it at the best final boss fight. It was good but not the greatest I thought the previous Zelda Twilight Princess had a better final fight. Once a few things were explained at the end of the game the connection between Ocarina of Time made more and more sense. Glad I bought it and played through it. Gave me a very good excuse to fire up the Wii again and play it like I used to when I first got my Wii.

I know everyone is talking about Skyward Sword, and I plan on getting to that eventually this year, but I am doing something I have never done.....I'm playing Majora's Mask. I don't have a very good reason at all for why I haven't played it before now. I have had over 11 years to do it and I have no excuses. Now this is going to sound weird since it's my random thoughts on the game probably many of you have possibly beaten over and over and might even be your favorite Zelda, but here we go.

I'm not sure if I love the 3 day cycle or feel that it hurts it. I kind of like the Higurashi/Groundhog's Day aspect of reliving the same few days over and over and seeing the little nuances that are different depending on how you do stuff, but I can't help feel that I would have liked the game better if you only moved the time with the ocarina instead of having constant clock. From a story perspective I think it works really well, but from a gameplay standpoint it's just not my favorite kind of thing. I have a bit of a personal issue with games with time limit barriers since I like to make sure I've done all I can before I usually move on in a game. (I blame my oldschool jrpg mentality)

I do like the idea of the masks a lot. Currently my shape-shifting masks are deku scrub and goron, they both have their benefits. I also like the regular masks and love how much faster Link runs with the bunny ears on.

I've thought the dungeon design has been pretty solid so far, granted I've only done 2 of them, but they were both enjoyable. So I can't give my final verdict on those just yet.

A weird thing that I want to comment on is the music. While the music is good, I feel like too much is borrowed from Ocarina of Time. I know there are many original songs here, but I just can't feel that was pretty lazy on Nintendo's part.

Overall though, for one of the only Legend of Zelda games I haven't played it is a lot of fun. It's not going to be at the top of my list, but certainly an interesting experiment they had that has nice atmosphere and a world worth checking out.

Short top 5 list that sums up my grievances with Skyward Sword pretty well and probably better than how I did when I last posted on it

http://www.zeldauniverse.net/zelda-news ... ent-wrong/

Spoiler
1. Content Spread too Thin

Mackey explains that Zelda was supposed to be a game with new sidequests and lots of extra content, but it was confined to only three areas and a “level select” overworld, limiting the excessive content the game includes. He points out that Link revisits “old areas under the thinnest of pretenses, where he undergoes tedious and unimaginative tasks.”

2. An Unchanging World

Skyward Sword is missing something Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and The Wind Waker had, the ability to change the world around you. Mackley points on how the instruments in those games had more useful and user friendly purposes. As he says, “Skyward’s harp offers nothing but a stupid-easy mini-game used to unlock a series of prescribed places.”

3. A Lack of Exploration

Mackey notes that Skyward Sword is missing something that has been included in Zelda since the first game in 1986, exploration. He says, “Skyward Sword may cut down on aimless wandering by opening up accessible areas essentially one “level” at a time, but in doing so, the game world feels disconnected, linear, and completely lacking in surprises.”

4. A Lack of Character

“Skyloft’s Bazaar is populated with some of the most bizarre and expressive characters within the entire Legend of Zelda series–but in Skyward Sword, Nintendo’s devotion to character begins and ends with this single location,” writes Mackey. He feels that the game needed deeper NPCs.

5. Once Again, an Annoying Sidekick

Mackey makes it clear that Fi is as annoying as Navi, if not more. She gives you statistics instead of good advice. In addition, she summarizes everything you are told, sometimes using more words than the NPC did.

Shameless plug: Listen to next week's YIBR episode for some Zelda discussion, you can expect more of this (probably even better than the 1st podcast) as the weeks go on.
