What does "doesn't work" mean?

It's not google, it's you: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=How+to+use+a+Gameb ... +Windows+7

It looks like there aren't drivers for it. You can always try Vista drivers or an XP virtualization (bad idea).
Apparently, it works out of the box in Linux :p

I read all of that stuff and it didn't work. I ran the software in winxp mode like they said and it still didn't work. This is why I HATE Googling for tech answers, I get a bajillion answers and most of them are incorrect.

Ok, this is driving me up a wall, and I'm this close to recreating the scene where the general asks Bill Gates about windows, gets jargon and shoots him.

I'll start with the small problem that is like soul cancer at the moment.

1. I'm using windows 7
2. I have "show all hidden files and folders" in my folder options menu
3. I enable my LAN connection, before plugging it in.
4. The ICON VANISHES before I can make adjustments.

How do I keep the goddamn icon, or any icon from vanishing?

Is it resetting the "view hidden folders" flag, or is the explorer view you're looking at not refreshing the file listing? (Usually if explorer decides its doing something else, your file list will "disappear", but it's just waiting to refresh. Yes, this is unacceptable, but it's been that way forever)

The tab isn't resetting, I can still see all other hidden files.

I have 4 icons in my network setting folder.

Wireless -Enabled
Wireless 2 -Disabled
Wireless 3 -Disabled
LAN -Disabled

Then I decide to "enable" my LAN.

Then THIS happens

Wireless - Enabled
Wireless 2- Disabled
Wireless 3 - Disabled
LAN- Enabled...unplugged (X)

...before I can blink

Wireless- Enabled
Wireless 2 -Disabled
Wireless 3- Disabled

....yeah. I need to make changes, and adjust settings on an enabled connection that isn't plugged in, but windows 7 is trying to be "convenient" like a FUCKING APPLE, and removing something from my sight. I admit to being a control freak, but c'mon, who the fuck considers this a feature?

Is the cable physically plugged in and wireless disabled?

No, there are three wireless connections, two are disabled, one is enabled.

I plug in a cable, but I do not turn on the device for the LAN, because I need to make adjustments to an unplugged, but enabled LAN. Something I could do in XP.

If the ethernet device still functions ... but the icon is just disappearing when you disconnect the cable (seriously, why do you care?) try uninstalling the network adapter in Device Manager, then restarting the computer.

Okay, my communication card came in, but now I have another problem. I installed the software, yet my computer will not allow my driver to be installed because it says it's unsigned. Any help?

Windows Signatures are a joke, it only doesn't install if you go "oh my god, yes, Microsoft thank you for stopping these people who didn't pay you an enormous licensing fee" just continue it when you get that "warning".

The issue is that my computer won't allow the driver to install. Right now I'm using Vista SP2 and it says that I need to have all digitally signed drivers. When I checked the modem on the Phone and Modem options, it wrote "not functional". I'm guessing it's because it won't let it install.

You bought this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6825115033
and are trying to use these drivers: http://www.zoomtel.com/techsupport/dial_up/3035.shtml

Correct?

If so, you need to contact them. They're WHQL certified (which means they ARE digitally signed). Just contact their technical support to help you out further.

Yes, I bought that item.

I tried it again one more time, and this time it worked and now my internet is working again. Thanks a ton, Crono. You saved me from a lot of troubles and I really appreciate it. :-)

No. Just do it before asking.

People should at least try to solve their own issues. This thread is for things that are highly technical in solution or very obscure issues, things that people genuinely need help with. If your answer can be easily found through a google query, you really shouldn't be asking and wasting everyone else's time. In those types of situations, you're just offloading the effort onto someone else to solve your problem (regardless if you like/know/want to use a search engine or not), and that person isn't being paid. You're just wasting their time.

I don't see how this doesn't sound fair.

Rhetorical question. As it was a joke.

And honestly I have to say this.. You seem to take this tech support thread on a personal level, and I'm not trying to insult you at all. You're obviously very intelligent and I respect the amount of technical knowledge you possess. I think it's remarkable to watch you go in depth on the technical aspects of some of your posts. But seriously, if you find a question 'beneath your level' and it can be solved with a simple query, but you don't feel like being a broken record and saying "Google it" over and over... Just don't reply.
Like you, yourself, said. No one's getting paid to fix the problems brought to the table in this thread. So no one HAS to respond. What I'm saying is, I agree no one's hired to do this, but people don't need you, or ANYONE ELSE for that matter, jumping on their balls to google everything they want to post. (now people calling you out specifically for something that's easily looked up, I understand getting upset.)
This thread was started as a place for people to bring their tech issues, so it's no surprise to me that they feel more comfortable coming here than they do going out into the scary interweb. NO ONE PERSON is expected to be the only person to respond.

Like I said, I think you're a kick ass guy and super-intelligent and don't really want to come off as offensive or upsetting, but I had to say my piece.

I figured :p
But turning a legitimate thread into an open ground for jokes just sidetracks it and leads to it being closed.

I don't. I just respond when there's something I know about. If I don't know anything or can't find anything useful I don't say anything. Which has happened plenty of times.

Legotoadeto wrote:

I don't think anyone's questions are "beneath me". I'm not some elitist prick. That's just the wrong way to look at what happened in the PSP thread, frankly.

Not only do I not say, "Google It" over and over again, but Joel is a unique case. The guy would constantly (as in the more than 20 times) asks these kinds of questions. And, yes, SPECIFICALLY to me. He has on multiple occasions come into the IRC channel and called me out to help him with an issue that is, literally, a very easy thing to find using a search engine. He literally just doesn't want to do it himself. As a result, he really pisses me off sometimes.

The guy flagrantly abused the help I offered on multiple occasions.

In the case of Joel, which is the ONLY case you could be referring to, he abused the help that I offered previously to an appalling degree, and yeah, when he shifted from asking me in IRC to just making threads about it, I decided to bust his balls a bit while I helped him out. (I know he didn't notice, but I still helped him out)

I don't really think that's really illegitimate.

Like I said, I don't mind helping people. Even if it's something that's findable using a search engine, I still don't mind helping, I understand that even if you find answers, you may not understand them: that's fine, ask away.

I don't view the tech questions as "mine" and I don't feel obligated to answer anyone's questions. Joel was a specific case of someone being abusive to help offered. I don't think I'm above anyone here, and if you feel that way, that says much more about you than I.

I'll be frank: if this is generally what people think of me here, then I don't really see a point in sticking around, regardless of tech. related issues.
It just shows that people in the community really have no idea what I'm like (even in an e-personality sense) and have decided I'm some sort of stereotypical elitist tech prick. In which case it's just not worth having to deal with anyone who has that kind of mindset about me.

I don't think anyone thinks of you as a stereotypical elitist prick at all. I just had a few things to say regarding the issue.

If anything, I think of you as an intelligent, cool-headed contributor to the forums. As do Most people I'm sure. Rarely do you lose your head, and attack people for their posts. Honestly with a post like my previous one, I get nervous about the response it will get, because I feel I have valid points but don't like upsetting people. But after reading the response from you, it's calm and collect. Not anything as abrasive as, "Fuck you buddy!!!" I hope the post I made didn't make you think you're not appreciated in this community, because I can tell you right now, I come to these forums, click on that little "View new posts" link in the corner and if I see one that's latest post was by Crono, I'm clicking that shit. Regardless of it's subject, because I know it'll be a good read.

But I digress. I'll stop derailing this thread. . . . for now.
