I have to disagree, Dylan. I felt most of the roster was service to the fans of comic books, the previous games, and Capcom in general. Characters like Deadpool, She-Hulk, and X-23 were all great comic book characters that carried on, and making a moveset for Taskmaster was for the comic fans, considering his photographic reflexes allows him to copy other people's moves and strategies. Let's not forget Spencer (though Rad is way cooler), Haggar, Dante, Arthur, Hsien-Ko, Ammy, Wesker, and Chris; all fan favorites that made their first appearances in the game. Even with characters that they didn't or couldn't put, they at least put an effort to have a character with similar characteristics, like Super Skrull having the Fantastic 4's powers and Zero essentially being Mega Man X with a sword. On top of that, they brought in characters that fans loved in the previous games, like Sentinel, Storm, Dr. Doom, and Magneto.
Granted how many memorable characters Capcom has and Marvel's huge history, it's impossible to please everybody. I understand you being annoyed at no Frank, because Jill is tied for my favorite Capcom character (along with Ryu), and instead of the awesome MvC 2 version, I got the crappy fast one that is a pain to play as. But I just pushed it aside and enjoyed the game with other characters. For the Frank West, Phoenix Wright, Gene, and not-sucky Jill missing, we got Haggar, Arthur, Spencer, Wesker, and a ton more faces to make up for it. Sure, the Capcom side wasn't as great as I hoped, but when I played the game, almost every character felt different from the other and brought in something new to the gameplay.
And that's the key word: gameplay. The roster isn't what makes a fighting game good. It may be more appealing to play as your favorite comic book and third party company characters, but if the gameplay sucks, then there's no point in even playing the game, no matter how many of your favorite characters are in it.
