As I tell absolutely everyone... re-read my edit to the first post and do yourself a HUGE favor and watch those tie-in series as well. It will make the later season finale a katrillionbillion times better because it has so many crossover characters and in-jokes and it's just nerdgasmic.

Definitely. Only thing i'd be sad about is that I'd have to take a break to watch all those series and stop watching the Doctor. :(

Thought I'd post in the proper topic for a change (awesome)

Anyhoo: (Up to Doctor Who series 4 finale thoughts)

Torchwood and Doctor Who have this tendency to be insanely bittersweet. There's usually a happy ending to be found, but there's always something big or small that's really dark or depressing.

Torchwood is great, truth be told. It's kind of like if The X-files crossed with Angel. The team is great and they really grew on me. Especially Owen, who I didn't like at the start. But man, did he grow as a character. Oh and Janto, man!
And don't get me started on Captain John Hurt.
Spoiler
The euh ... wife ... of the relationship ... with Jack.

I lawled so much. Maybe the best character of the entire show. :rabbid:

Sarah Jane's first season was alright, but nothing groundbreaking. Absolutely fantastic as a kids show, but still. Right now I'm watching season 2 and it's better. But still not great. Feels less like a kids show now though. Which is fantastic.

And Doctor Who is just plain damned brilliant. David Tennant was the best doctor ever, Eccleston was awesome (big ears and all) and the companions were all alright. Rose really improved in that second season, turning in to a great character. Martha was fresh and light and Donna slapped the doctor around. Nothing but possitives :yum:

But again, Doc Who can get pretty dark sometimes :ohnoes:

Read Puddle Jumper's love letter topic to me. Trust me, it pays off in a huge way. Those series are so good, and tie in so well, and the Doctor cameos in their shows and they cameo in his that it really just feels like extra Dr. Who by the end.

Definitely.

Both Sarah Jane as Jack Harkness have appeared in the Doctor Who series. Not to mention

Spoiler
Gwen, who is a descendant of the lady in season one with Charles Dickens.

and K9, though it only cameos.

Also I just remembered ... JACK HARKNESS IS

Spoiler
THE FACE OF BOE???!!!

Whoa!

EDIT: ALSO

Spoiler
That episode where the solarians gas the planet and the doctor is first wearing that gasmask and he's all like: "Are you my mommy?" I had to stop the video for ten minutes because I couldn't stop laughing.

In response to your edit, I also couldn't stop laughing. That was by far the best joke in the entire new series.

At this point I've only seen the fifth series all the way through, though I've seen sporadic episodes of all the other new series. I don't have any desire to watch the spin-off shows. Anyway, I know that David Tennant is awesome, but Matt Smith is definitely my favorite Doctor I've seen thus far.

The payoff for watching these spin-offs better be worth it. I'm in the middle of season 1 of Torchwood, and it's not terrible, but not great. Aside from Harkness, the other characters are pretty annoying. Especially Gwen and Owen.

The Poison Sky. It's part of a two episode arc. It follows The Sontaran Stratagem

Gwen pretty much keeps all those annoyances but she's fleshed out for the better as well. Owen just starts to kick ass all over the place ^^

Sorry to be double posting but damn. Just saw The End of Time. And ... yeah, well, I'm still crying. FFS   :ohnoes:   Fantastic work of television.

Coming off of Torchwood: Children of Earth, that's a whole lot of emotion going around. DJEEZ.

These two must be the greatest pieces of television I have ever seen.

And then you will be missing out on one of the most episode (2-parter but hey) in the whole history of Doctor Who.

The Christmas Carol episode was really good. One of the best Matt Smith episodes so far. It wasn't exactly would you would think. It was kind of nice to have an episode that doesn't have some evil alien being behind it all and really focus on characters and story. I'm not sure if they show this one as part of the season or not but well worth tracking down. I rented the blu ray and it looked 10x better than broadcast quality.

I'll say this about the spin-offs, Torchwood and Sarah Jane both have rocky Season 1's, and then they find a voice of their own. If you were digging K-9 then you'll enjoy his presence as a full-time member of the cast in Sarah Jane Season 3.

What it all comes down to though is this:

There is a MAJOR Torchwood spoiler at the end of Season 3 of Dr. Who, and possibly with any other future appearances of Jack Harkness in the series. Thus the importance of not waiting to watch the spin-offs or else major spoilage happens.

Characters from the spin-offs cameo regularly throughout each others series. Dr. Who makes an off camera appearance in Torchwood, and has 2 on camera episodes in Sarah Jane in her later series. K-9 also becomes a regular on that series. It's just nice to know who these characters are and what their stories are, it really helps flesh out the universe as a whole.

Yeah, I'm in the Middle of Dr. Who, season 4, but stopped to watch Torchwood, so I know the huge spoiler at the end of Season 3.

and my thoughts on that:
Spoiler
I assume you're talking about the fact that Jack is the Face of Bo. I loved that I found that out with the Doctor and Martha at the end of that season. It was definitely a moment that made me say "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!" and watching Martha and the Doctor have the same reaction was cool. I'm not sure how they reveal it in Torchwood, as I'm not there yet, but it'd be hard to beat the reaction I had from finding it out at that point in the Doctor Who series.

1) Merrill from DA2 is voiced by the actress playing Gwen Cooper :rabbid:

2) Matt Smith as The Doctor. Not bad. Not bad at all. His posture bugs the hell out of me, the slumping and all, but overall he's a pretty cool Doctor. No David Tennant, but well on his own and equally as good in his own way.
Amy is cool too. Reminds me a lot of the Tenth Doctor in some ways.

3) Torchwood

Spoiler
GOD DAMN IT NOT JANTO

4) Sarah Jane season 2 ... FUCKING CLOWNS are the scary :-(

5) Yeah, you really need to watch everything in order. Makes everything so much better, if you ask me. Adds a bit of depth to everything like vvvvv

6) The End of Time

Spoiler
Tennant's final goodbyes. If you haven't seen Torchwood or Sarah Jane, then you probably wouldn't have felt the same when he was going from Luke to Jack.

Moving on from point 5, The End of Time really was quite amazing. I was happy to see Donna's granddad having a big part in this one, as I really liked that guy. The whole four knocks things really caught me off guard and my heart literally skipped a beat at its conclusion. Everything from that moment on really pulled every string of my heart. Poor Tenth Doctor. And his last words really had me going on a crying binge for hours.

EDIT ONE:

Spoiler
The Doctor: Didn't anyone ever tell you? There's one thing you never put in a trap if you're smart. If you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never, ever put in a trap.
Angel Bob: And what would that be, sir?
The Doctor: Me.

This doctor is helluva good for awesomeness tho

Actually that's not the huge spoilers. The spoiler was more Torchwood related and less so Dr. Who related. :)

I think I figured something out and I hope someone else agrees. But, I think I understand what it is about season 5 that I'm having a problem with. Everything is so ... emotionally unattached. It's like the Tenth Doctor seasons Light.

Like for instance

Spoiler
The episode where that the U.K. ship was riding on a giant whale

Wow that sounded weird typing it out like that. Anyhoo.

Spoiler
The doctor had a choice between saving the whale and saving the people. But Amy comes up with an answer just in time to save both. I'm fairly positive that if this was an episode in the previous season, that answer would have arrived after the doctor killed the whale.

It's kind of like House M.D. where you know that if something is right, it's bound to get wronged. It'd be like if something went right and stayed right.

Yeah, I know that the tenth doctor had plenty of happy ending stories, but. well, in previous seasons there always had to be a permanent sacrifice. A pretty heavy sacrifice. Or something very dark like the Cybermen where the Doctor handled them

Spoiler
by making them feel again so that they would die by the shock of seeing what they have become

Or the Episodes in The Library

Spoiler
where the people were still alive inside them chips for a while, not knowing they were dead.

Or with the pig men in Manhattan or with the Weeping Angels episode in season 3 where

Spoiler
The people were ripped from their time and sent back many years as a means to kill them.

There are elements of that present in the stories in season 5, but they just feel watered down. And that's a real shame because I'm really liking The Doctor, Amy, Rory and more.

I guess. I think there's a lot of really dark stories in Season 5, wait until you see the Christmas Special, there's definitely emotional variation throughout the series.

Looking at what the 6th season has in store, I have a feeling there will be some dark storylines in this series too, I am extremely excited to see what happens with the overarching storyline, especially if you've read some of the rumors or heard Moffat discuss the overall plot, this season could trump the first Smith seson, that series 6 trailer really wowed me.

And goddamn, new favorite quote "Fear me, I've killed hundreds of time lords." "Fear me, I've killed all of them" Matt Smith you brilliant actor, really excited for what he brings this season

3 things I'm excited for among others

Spoiler
1. The silence, who and what they or it is and what happened to the TARDIS

2. If you watch very closely in that last main trailer you'll notice something pretty damn big, Amy and Rory inside the 9th/10th Doctor's coral tardis! Theres been interesting theories floating around, for example that Amy and Rory have to ensure 10 regenerate's into 11 and the TARDIS crashes into her yard, or that it might even be the 8th doctor's regeneration! Some very cool possibilities and knowing Moffat, we won't be disappointed.

3. One of the other trailer's showed us the Ood, I can't wait too see 11 interact with them and also Amy and Rory, should be good

And then there's River Song, I can't even begin to theorize what Moffat has planned for us, we'll just wait and see!
