Do it. And don't forget to play it on hard.

Why do I need to play it on hard? Usually I just do first runs on normal because that seems to be the best balence in terms of difficulty and I can focus more on the story and experience. Second run I usually go for hard/expert if I really enjoy the game. Is there new game plus so you keep your upgrades?

Well, usually I'm the same way. But Dead Space is too easy on Normal. And yes, there is a new game plus, but it doesn't let you change the difficulty, if that's what your wondering.

Normal is the new Easy nowadays, imho. I think, in a horror/action title like this, if you want to have the horror vibe go for a hard difficulty. Otherwise you get into "John Rambo" territory with these types of games, where you have an excessive amount of special weapon ammo, because you really don't need any weapon aside from the default gun.

This happened to me both in Dead Space and Alan Wake and Bioshock, and used to happen to me in Resident Evil games and other various FPS titles (maybe I just conserve ammo too much waiting for some epic fight where I'll need it.) But, yeah, the harder the difficulty, the scarier the game due to needing more ammo to kill things. I vote go for a hard difficulty if you're looking for some real adrenaline pumping gaming.

I've decided to wait on getting this game. Next year I'm going to be a lot more selective over what games I get on or close to release and with the way things worked out this year Dead Space 2 will end up being like $20 new after 6-8 months. Busy playing New Vegas, Dragon Age and whatever I get for xmas so I can wait on Dead Space.

Just finished the demo and here's a quick spoiler free breakdown

-The demo starts off in a cryochamber of sorts, then a little anti gravity puzzle section and ends after a walk through the church of unitology.

- The controls are pretty much the same with a few tweeks here and there. When you stomp now you can mash the button faster for more frantic stomps and since Isaac now has a voice actor he'll scream out lines like "Shit! Die!". Another new thing is the rocket boots for the anti gravity sections which took a little getting used to but work just fine once you get the hang of it.

-They outfit you with 4 guns: the plasma cutter, pulse rifle, line gun and the new spear gun. The spear gun is fucking sweet. If you don't kill an enemy with a clean shot you can hit the the secondary fire button to electrocute it. Now at first I thought "ok this gun is a bit broken" but it was the only gun that I didn't find ammo for and it may be the least forgiving with aim so it does balance out.

-You get to fight a few of the new necromophs in the game (I only saw 2 from the old game). Not sure if you want to know which ones so I'll just keep it ambiguous.

-The demo is pretty much everything we've seen from E3, which I'm kind of glad because I don't want to spoil anymore of the game for myself.

-Lastly, and more importantly, it's still scary, at least I think so. To explain I'm going to have to put a spoiler box, but if you rather wait and experience it yourself don't read on.

Spoiler
There is a point where you get through the church and reach a really small elevator. After a few seconds you'd expect the elevator to reach its stop and for the doors to open. But before that happens a necromorph rips through the ceiling and drops in with you, not leaving any room to move, much less run. I blind fired to knock it down and then mashed on the melee stomp to kill it.

From the little that you hear it in the demo its not bad. He doesn't have a gravely voice. He sounds like a normal guy, which is probably the only way I can explain it. There was on point where you hear it and I thought I was hearing someone else in the same room until I realized the second time around it was Isaac.

I think it was a big change that was needed compared to the first Dead Space. They put Issac in to many situations where it required him to say something to really stick out as a character.

Not to mention.
Spoiler
When he found out his wife was dead, all he did was just sway his head. He came off like a robot the whole time during the game.

Giving him a voice is a good approach.

I disagree, I actually love the silent protagonist games, because then you can more easily put yourself in the character's shoes. Some of the best games take that approach, Half-Life, Bioshock (i still thought the story in that game was good despite my feelings for the game overall), Chrono Trigger, Zelda (at least most of them), F.E.A.R, Portal, Fallout etc..

It allows people to use their own judgments and motives when something critical occurs in the game. I know some people hate this style, but I've always been a huge fan of it, and am a little saddened that Dead Space is getting rid of it in the sequel. Still, I'm pretty sure it'll be a great game regardless and I know if done correctly the addition of voice to the main character can add a lot, perhaps even more than the subtlety of a silent protagonist. Let's hope!

It's not that I hate the style, it's just that in some games it can't be pulled off well. Take for instance, the Call of Duty franchise. "RAMIREZ GO UP THAT BUILDING! RAMIREZ SHOOT THAT HELICOPTER! RAMIREZ! MAKE ME A SANDWICH!"

And that's what Dead Space felt like. Isaac go turn on those generators! Isaac! go out into space and kill this giant monster! Isaac, go save your already dead wife! Isaac, go bring me that marker! Everyone in Dead Space does a great job with their acting and lines, but Isaac just comes off as this expendable main character that could be replaced with any other person with the same suit. There is really nothing that makes him stick out (other than the suit).

Giving him character, and the ability to talk, will give him that appeal that's needed. Gordon Freeman doesn't need this because they set up the dialogue and supporting characters so well that the player can easily interpret their reaction. Jack from Bioshock, had an amazing origin behind him that raveled him in mystery, and the story even helped in making him better as a silent protagonist.

Dead Space, is one of those games that needs dialogue for the main character. There isn't much focus on Isaac himself, other than his wife and the Marker helping him. The main attraction, is just the Marker itself.

You're right, games like Bioshock and Half-Life pulled the silent protagonist off way better. Still I don't think they did a terrible job with Isaac. You know he's taken the mission to save the Ishimura because of his love interest, which i think is actually his fiance, not sure though. You know he's just an engineer put into an extraordinary situation and that's where a lot of the appreciation is for me. It's why I like Gordon Freeman so much, they go above and beyond their limitations. Gordon is a really capable scientist turned into a revolutionary hero. Isaac is just a mechanical engineer (i think), who ends up fighting his way through a nightmarish ship filled with the dead carcasses of humans turned aliens.

You come across many other dead crew along the way, and that's what makes him stick out. He's one of a kind, because not only does he have the skills the repair the ship and get tasks accomplished that no other common soldier could, he also kicks a lot of ass and takes on horrors that no other engineer could. He's bearing a huge burden that most anyone would crumble under.

While I agree that supporting characters in Half-life were more prominent and did a better job of giving Gordon a personality, I think Dead Space went a different way on purpose. The fact that he's alone for most of the game is what made it so immersive. The hopeless feeling of being alone with this burden was so much more intense that way. I think the best comparison would actually be system shock, which was very similar, and maybe why i liked Dead Space so much.

I'm really looking forward to hearing Isaac talk in this one. While playing Dead Space 1 there were times where I kinda wanted to hear what Isaac was thinking about all of this and I imagine it would have gone something like this.

Kendra - Isaac, you need to get the trams online and operational again

Isaac - Okay, we's should prob'ly try an' page fo' backup but I suppose it would be smart fo' me ta try an' save da day all by myself, I mean what could possibly jet wrong? Ya' dig?

Kendra - Isaac, you need to get to the starboard on the ship ASAP

Isaac - I say da events dat gots happened here on dis here day iz absolutely profound an' gross. HOLY SHIT A Necromorph!!!!! Don't make me come ovah there bitch...

Issac's voice in the demo seemed to be that of an average dude. In other words, he didn't sound like an action star or anything like that. As far as gameplay goes, it is basically the same as the first Deadspace (which works just fine imo). The game is still scary and it seems like the new necromorphs will add an adtional challenge to the game. There is one that spits acid at you, so you'll have to keep your distance with deal with regular necromorphs. I had forgotten about this game until the demo came and now I am looking forward to it.

I played the demo and thought it was really fun. I had a blast with the nail gun.

I never got scared playing Dead Space though. It was unsettling, but nothing especially scary about it.

I freaking started playing it yesterday, and realized my R2 and L2 buttons weren't working, so I exchanged both of my controllers then got roped into a social event. I will be playing it today, and I can't wait!

EDIT: Well, I got new controllers, and the L2 and R2 still don't work. I tried re-downloading the demo and re-installing it, didn't work. Anyone else having this problem? It's stopping me from playing the game because I don't want to go through the demo not being able to run, stomp, alt fire, or open anything. So far it seems really cool, but this is a huge annoyance.

I love how vulnerable issac seems in this new game, he isnt some roided up behemoth who is phased by nothing ( /waves at chris redfield ) , the dude is scared shitless, losing his grip on reality and forced to deal with it.

I am glad all the rumors about this going to be a run and gun game were false, I am still not completely sold on the multi player, but who knows it might end up being great.

I can not wait for this game, next to ME3 this is probably my most anticipated game of the year.

I hate the commercials.
Older-ish women saying how awful they think it all is followed by "It's violent, it's everything you like in a video game".

Dumb. :serious:
