It's just extremely ambiguous. Nothing is given any sort of real explanation and it's all left very open to interpretation.

Sort of what Braky says. In one way, you're like "Fuck, it feels like there should be more to the story to learn and discover." In another way, it doesn't dumb shit down like the Silent Hill movie does for example. It says, hey fucker, you played this game, here's your ending. Confused? Figure it the fuck out on your own. Peace!

A lot of answers are there, but they involve a lot of thinking, maybe a replay, maybe reading the Alan Wake Files that come with the collector's edition, maybe watching the Bright Falls mini-series prequel on your X-Box 360, etc.

For example... here's another mindfuck from the ending *SPOILERS, BIG ONES! BUT THEORETICAL!*:

Spoiler
Nightingale is a construct of Alan's writing. He is a character from a previous story Alan has written. Primarily the Alex Casey stories, he's pissed off and hunting down Alan as a murderer because he killed his partner back in NY. His partner? ALEX CASEY! DUN! DUN! DUN!!!!!!

Seriously, I wouldn't be able to figure that sort of shit out unless I heavily played the game, read the book, watched the mini-series, and just went through everything a 2nd time.

That Nightingale thing was the only thing I think I actually did figure out on my own. Mostly because he acted so unrealistically stupid. Like, what a fucking dick!

Here's something to add to all of that
Spoiler
In a game informer interview with Sam Lake from Remedy studios the character of Alex Casey comes up. When asked if Alex Casey was really Max Payne here was his response:

"Now that you mention it, Alan Wake's past success as a writer of hardboiled crime fiction could well be interpreted to mirror Remedy's past success and the games we have worked on. funny thing, that.

Also in the same interview they he said that the first DLC pack will be their interpretation of the ending as it takes place after the ending of the game.

Just some more food for thought.

Effin' fantastic game. So many parts that still left me confused, but after going back into it again I fully understand. I can't wait for the DLC!

I was really hoping that this would be the game that set the bar for survival horror in the 2010s. I've had people say that it's a great game, but it's not going to do all that.

I would consider it more of a survival thriller than survival horror. There are some really intense moments where you're panicing and praying you have enough ammo to make it through a huge wave of taken but there weren't many big scares. Still, A+ game and I can't wait for the next episode just to help piece some things together story-wise.

Maybe if you suck... or if you're playing Nightmare. I went through on Hard and I had an abundance of ammo.

Let me tell you all what's "scary" to a gamer. Dying and losing progress. The reason Survival Horror games were awesome is because you had a limited amount of saves, and specific "safe rooms" to save at. If you died, that was it, you had to start over from your last save point. Alan Wake saves the game every 5 seconds at pretty much every lamp post and/or cutscene you make it to. This removes the fear factor from the game. Much the reason Bioshock can't be truly survival horror scary either, not because of the vita-chambers, but because you can save whenever you want.

well I finished alan wake and have to say I enjoyed it very much, wasn't to difficult and the only really hard part was doing the gunless wonder achievement when i ran out of flares and flashbangs. Going back through it on nightmare so I can get the last few missing pages but i'm looking forward to the dlc

Keep in mind there are two planned DLC episodes for Alan Wake which are most likely going to pick up right where the game left off so I think that is why they ended it the way they did. I thoroughly loved this game but I also didn't care much for the ending. I also would have liked a little more time in the beginning to move about the town while things were still normal.

Hi,
I absolutely love it so far and not sorry to finish Dead Red Redemption. 5 years of love put into this baby and it shows all the steps of the road.

I have to say, The Signal was fantastic and fixed all the issues I had with the ambiguous ending by explaining everything straight off, then oddly enough, delivering a chapter that I found to be even better than the ones built into the disc!

Well looks like I'll need to take a break from Castlevania to play this. I really enjoyed the Signal and I'm guess the Writer be just as intense.

I'm psyched for The Writer! Just finished my Nightmare run, but I'm still missing like 6 pages...I hope I can pull the full manuscript together before The Writer at least.

Oh shit, this means I'm gonna need, like....money. Fuuuuuuuuuck.

Beat it the other day on Normal it was pretty fantastic. To me it felt like less of a game and more of a virtual novel. Had I bought the game instead of gameflying it I'd give the DLC a shot.

DLC is even MORE worth the money if you gameflyed it, because then you're not even paying that much.
