Damn, that really sucks. I grew up watching those movies and I still rate the end of Back to the Future as one of the best movie endings I can remember. Hopefully they can repair/rebuild without much problem.

The most ironic thing was, I was planning on going there today to check out "The Simpsons Ride" ...shit.

It was an explosion, not an arson that caused the fire from what they know. Due to low water pressure, they hard a hard time containing the blaze, which resulted in many things burning. Here is what I found with some of the affected set pieces. They did not mention the King Kong ride though.

CNN wrote:
The fire destroyed an area called New York street, which includes movie set-style buildings designed to look like the cityscape of New York City. Hours after the blaze was reported, the roughly two-block area appeared charred and resembled a "disaster movie," said Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge.

LaBonge said he could see the smoke from his Silver Lake home Sunday morning. "It looked like a bomb had exploded," he said.

The blaze began around 4:45 a.m. (7:45 a.m. ET) and was contained initially by 9 a.m. Throughout the morning, large plumes of black smoke rose as the fire burned the vault containing hundreds of videos, said Ron Meyer, chief operating officer of Universal Studios.

"Fortunately, nothing irreplaceable was lost," Meyer said. "The video library was affected and damaged, but our main vault of our motion picture negatives was not."

The set of "The Changeling," a film recently directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie, was "completely destroyed," Meyer said.

Another area called "Courthouse Square" also was destroyed, Meyer said. Numerous movies have been shot in that area, including several scenes of the 1985 hit "Back to the Future," Meyer said.

And two of the eight locations used by the CBS series "Ghost Whisperer" were affected, he said.

Fire inspectors had not determined what caused the blaze, said Los Angles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman. There were no reports of filming at the time of the fire

I honestly didn't even know the set still existed. I mean I do love the Clock Tower, but I guess I won't miss it much since I never knew it was still there.

Same here. Didn't know it still existed. Actually, I would have thought it was a real town square. Still kind of a bummer.

My friend and I make regular pilgrimages there. At least once a year we pack up our shit and make the drive from Seattle. We are huge BttF fans. We hold it in higher regard then any other trilogy. That includes Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The first movie has actually been placed in a historical vault for all time saving by some cinema institute because of its cultural significance.

I haven't heard from my friend since I told him the news. I'm afraid he may hurt himself.

I'm serious.

I am from the Hill Valley Preservation Society, we are donating money to "Save the Clock Tower" it was almost 29 hours ago on this day, that one of our beloved artifacts from Hill Valley's past was burned in a fiery grave and yet the War of the Worlds set, still stands...
