Reading Rainbow's final episode aired today.

In honor of Reading Rainbow I think we all need to take the time to list one of our favorite books, and maybe even list some details about it. There's TONS of great books out there that I'm sure many people can enjoy, but you don't have to take my word for it...

Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk

The book starts at page 289 and ends at page 1 .... Not gonna spoil it for you but by far my favourite book.

Image

Nausea - Jean Paul Sartre

I first heard about the book in the commentary track for the last episode of Firefly. I've read it 3 times and I still don't get it. I think that once I do get it I'll become a pretentious prick.

Some H.P Lovecraft stories worth noting: Rats in the Walls, Dagon and At the Mountains of Madness, wich I read while in the mountains of Norway... and I'll never recover.

Books are fun!

Honestly, I can't think of a book I've read better than this. It's just the best piece of literature for me.

Hmm... tough call. There are so many amazing books out there. But a here's a few of my favorites.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. An awesome mix of western, fantasy, science fiction and horror.
Image

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The Arthur Myth from a female perspective.
Image

And finally, a children's book called Momo by Michael Ende. A dark fantasy novel about how important it is to slow down and enjoy the moment.

I have lots of favorites, but I suppose I'll name a few.
Guess I'll start with something from my childhood.

Image
Shaped my sense of humor.

Image
A spoof on the spy genre written by Hugh Laurie.
Reminded me a lot of the Val Kilmer film, "Top Secret!"

Image
Story about a bumbling detective trying to solve the mystery of how a millionaire woke up flat broke in a cardboard box.
It's written by a former writer of The Simpsons.

Image
My favorite Sherlock Holmes mystery.
Hound of the Baskervilles and The Red Headed League are tied for second.

Need to get that. I love John Schwartzwelder. They always rave about him in the Simpsons commentaries, I wished he'd actually appear in one (properly not like that one where they tricked him).

This is the best book ever written.

Great narrative, amazing plot twists and some of the best philisophical/religious thinking.

But what really makes this book awesome? It disproves Scientology as a big hoax.

How?

Well back in the 50's, two authors/friends had a discussion about the nature of religion. Those authors were Robert Heinlein and L. Ron Hubbard. A debate started concerning how easy it could be to start a religion. The authors decided to start their own religions based off their respective works. Hubbard based his off his book Dianetics and Heinlein based his off of Stranger in a Strange Land.

The result? Both religions garnered huge numbers, so much in fact, that Heinlein did not like the fact that people flocked so willingly to their manufactered religions. Heinlein pulled the plug on his...and we all know what Hubbard decided to do.

Case in point, Scientology = FAKE

I just read "It" this year, so it's still fresh in my mind, I don't know that I'd call it my favorite but it is definitely an amazing book.

I need to get back on my reading regimen.

Indeed. Read "Deadeye Dick" for even more Nazi lulziness.

Yes the book is waayyy better. The director admitted to hating the idea of magic and the supernatural so he took most of it out of the movie. And this is a book about Vampires, Wizards and Werewolves. WFT!? :verymad:

Wasn't this book a pseudo-basis for some of Bioshock's plot/elements?

It could be a basis but I dont have any proof for that, heck it could even be a basis for the MGS games aswell.

The book focuses on "man's mind in existence". so has philosophical themes like objectivism based on aristotle's work. It also tackles stuff about society like business, sex, social classes, a really good book. I tried living off of a philosophy of objectivism but something was lacking i had to go through the book 5 times to finally get everything >_<.
