Issue #11: Beeslo and I chill out and discuss the weirdness of anime. Not much else can be said, aside from... anime... it's pretty weird...

Note: This issue will probably not appear on the main site due to scheduling issues, Issue 12 will be on the main site on Tuesday.

Have you looked in to finding some audio streaming site? I like the show, but I think it and Protorype too could get a lot more listens if they were streamed in stead of downloadable.

But that's just me.

I've personally not looked into it, but it's definitely something worth considering. Having it downloadable AND streamable wouldn't hurt.

Except, if you're writing on the forums with your iPhone, it always leaves these funky ass characters. What the hell is up with those? It's on your Facebook, your text messages, etc. It's weird.

Have just ended my marathon of the podcast up to current, and I gotta say you're real contender to the prototype (Granted, you're in kinda different fields of topics, but you get what I mean). Keep up the good work guys.

I remember after the Eva ending my friends had all kinds "deep" theories, while I just said "fuck it, I'm gonna torture my brain over that".

I'm glad you like the show, it's awesome that people are listening to us. Totally off topic, just wanted to say that I love the badass Gambit sig. It's awesome.

If you guys are talking about weirdness, would you count the second season of Code Geass, or at least the second half of it? The first season was one of the best anime I had ever seen. The second had a lot of executive meddling which really screwed with the story so the writers could not do what they wanted. Each episode just gets bigger and bigger in terms of ridiculousness as time goes on.

Also, I cannot comment on The End of Evangelion because I've never seen anything from Evangelion.

FLCL is definitely one of the weirder anime I've seen, but I think Boogiepop Phantom and Serial Experiments Lain are more so. They may not have the over-the-top animation, but few things can beat them for thought provoking mind fuckage.

I didn't think FLCL was all that funny, really. I got more laughs from Puni Puni Poemy, and that's only two episodes.

That's not to say that I didn't like FLCL. To the contrary, I liked it enough to buy the DVDs. I just don't think it wins in those two categories.

Honestly, I feel shear insane randomness outdoes mind fucking. Lain, Boogiepop and others definitely can rape your head and make you feel like less of a man, but FLCL was never, ever once predictable because there were absolutely no restraints on it.

That's where we disagree. If an anime is going to screw with me on that level, it needs more substance than FLCL has to offer. It doesn't get my wheels turning like Lain and Boogiepop, and I think that's where it falls short.

I'm a HUGE Boogiepop fan (wasn't overly impressed with Lain) and let me tell you... it doesn't compare to FLCL.

I'm referring to this more in the sense of... I can figure out what's up with Boogiepop Phantom, it's actually NOT 100% confusing/senseless. FLCL... that's a different story, the plot is very... non-coherent and riddled with metaphors. At least that's how I view it.

So... while Boogiepop might be a mind fuck, FLCL is definitely a "weird" anime that's very difficult to understand/grasp with ease. Much like End of Evangelion. We were talking more on the level of "What makes you think vs. What you can't even understand after you think."

I think we can agree that all of the above mentioned anime can be considered "weird" in its own way. We just differ on what puts one over the other on that scale. To me, being completely mindless doesn't necessarily do that. Something that induces thought beats out something that doesn't. Just my take on it.

I haven't seen End of Evangelion, so I can't comment on that.

Since I wasn't involved in this podcast, I never got to share my opinions on a certain topic.

End of Eva - I know that all of you haven't seen it so:

Spoiler
Ok, I for one really like this movie. I also viewed eps 25-26 and this movie as separate endings. I have tried to come up with theories about linking them together, but the theory I'm most happy with has them apart.

The main difference between these 2 endings to me is Shinji's choice. Does he choose instrumentality? The answer to that to me is yes and no.

In the TV ending, I believe Shinji chooses instrumentality. I think that during the TV ending that the journey that Shinji is taking is something that everyone is taking at the same time. Since instrumentality pools everyone's collective unconsciousness, everyone can see themselves and other people for what they truly are. The entire show, Shinji is trying to figure out who he is and through instrumentality realizes how everything is connected, how people view him, and how he views himself.

However, in End of Eva, I don't think this happens at all. Well...that's not entirely true. I think that the process of instrumentality happens, but that Shinji does not want to take part in it. My viewpoint on the last scene is that Shinji chooses Asuka over instrumentality. He is unwilling to let go of the life he is living, and has realized how much he needs Asuka in his life. I think Asuka realizes this as well and says her famous last line. It is possible that during this ending other people have a choice to choose or not choose it like Shinji and that we only see Shinji's ending.

I've seen Eva and this movie 4 times, so this is my collective viewpoints on multiple viewings.

This issue makes me both want to watch and yet not watch End of Evangelion. I saw the whole series, then got confused with the number of movies out and couldn't pick which ones to watch and just eventually forgot about it. I kind of wanna see it due to curiousity but at the same time it sounds pretty terrible. <___<

Also, Link, I take it you enjoyed Wild Zero then? :durnk:
