Anybody see UFC117 last night? lol As predictec Junior Dos Santos won against Nelson. Chael Sonnen surprised me though, fucker fought like a BEAST! Silva was in trouble but that triangle choke came from nowhere!!!! awesome fight Silva is back to form.

An interesting fight, to say the least. Although Sonnen surprised me somewhat, I was more cynical than I'd been for some time after the fight. I happen to be a HUGE Silva fan and I'm about as anti-Dana/UFC as you can get, and I tend to think money goes to different people for different things (see what Petruzelli said about fighting Kimbo and what the promoters may or may not have said) and for some reason, call me a conspiracy theorist, 3:40 - 3:23 of Round 1 was as fishy as I've seen in a long time. That and the fact that after 4 1/2 rounds, Sonnen looked like he took a bath in a blender and Silva looked fresh as a daisy despite what Joe "every single thing that comes out of my mouth ends up predicting or assessing the exact opposite of what will happen" Rogan would scream for no real reason. It's just that if you muted the fight, it was almost as if Silva was intentionally drawing it out and could have done that earlier...

...but maybe I'm just paranoid.

I suppose if UFC had some major competition out there and they had to have more exciting fights then maybe. But for all intents and purposes they are the only game in town. They don't have to make fights exciting to try and compete because they are their only real competition. Yeah, Strikeforce, Shark Fights, Impact FC, Dream, but really, how much of a threat are they? If a fighter doesn't perform in the UFC, they are out so they don't really have a good reason to throw or otherwise stage a fight.

Anyways, what's up with JDS? That man is a wrecking ball on crack. Have to give props to Big Country though.

Strikeforce has probably been the most comp the UFC has. Pride is another MMA circuit to watch.

JDS had his moments but Nelson gave him a fight. Nelson's takedown defense was better this time around, gave Dos Santos a run for his money.

Silva's win over Sonnen is a legendary win...

Yeah, unfortunately, UFC is really the big dog right now, and you can thank the real-life yakuza for that (try to find out what happened to Pride on the inside, and you'll discover some pretty gruesome stuff). I tend not to be into brand loyalty, more following the fighters individually than anything else, but the UFC just annoys me as a whole product. The worst offender for me is the commentary. Rogan is the Bizarro Bas Rutten. If you ever see an event covered by Rutten, you'll notice he calls virtually every move before it happens, or what needs to happen, and what will happen if a guy doesn't move his leg an inch upwards, etc. Rogan mostly screams "HE'S ROCKED!!!" despite it being something like a jab grazing a guy's chin.

As for Silva (and I admit I'm probably reaching about the conspiracy, but still), one thing I'm hoping people pick up on is how there have been two shocking surprise triangle attempts that worked amazingly well in as many high-profile fights. And Ortiz almost got one on Machida a while back, too.

Nothing like a good soccer kick to the face to show who the better fighter is.

It's all nutrition and hard work!

Seriously though, it's for that same reason that I think he's more or less unstoppable now. If he cycles off, sure, he'd be like Superman with kryptonite, but for now, he might be literally twice the size he was when he lost to Liddell. Rogers looked like he was trying to ride a bull when fighting him.

i dunno man, i don't think its roids. Workouts and good eating habits can do wonders to the body. And horse meat ain't half bad it's like beef but chewy-er. Overeem is awesome.

Lesnar is definitely a freak, but he's also basically a bigger Mark Coleman (who was a fantastic fighter in his prime, so I'm not saying that as a negative). He has pretty much zero stand-up presence, but makes up for it with seemingly unstoppable takedowns with his strength, and the ground skills of a seasoned catchwrestler. I'm glad they didn't stop the Carwin fight (which I'm pretty sure they would have if it was anybody but Lesnar in there - See Sakuraba in Dream), since they usually stop those way too prematurely based on nothing, and Carwin looked terrible in terms of conditioning and ground defense in the 2nd. I wish I knew more about Velasquez than I do, but I'm still picking him over Lesnar.

And I hope anybody here gets a chance to follow Strikeforce, Dream, Sengoku, M1 or K1. I still think Overeem is the man to beat right now, and his last K1 outing had him looking like the old Mike Tyson of the '80s. Only bigger and with more technique (the guy trains with Fedor). He is NOT the guy they like to show in the Chuck Liddell highlights. If they fought now, Chuck might not survive!

You want a revival? Here's some predictions:

Brock over Cain via submission - Round 3.
Shields over Kampman via UD by way of brutal blanket smothering offense
Hammil over Ortiz via UD. Side note, I have Ortiz making an excuse to Joe Rogan after the loss.
Thiago over Sanchez via TKO round 2.
Schaub over Gonzaga via KO round 1.

And what the hell is up with teammates saying "I'll never fight XYZ." Now Jon Jones is on that wagon saying he'll never fight Rashad. I'm tired of hearing that. The best fight the best in my world.

Seriously, the size difference is unthinkable when it comes to the main event. I'm a Cain fan myself and I don't think he can pull this one off, it's Brock after all. He can win under a few conditions though:
Stand up, remember the Minotauro fight?
win through decision, if he paces his moves and doesn't got all Shane Carwin on him
avoid take downs in general. Be a god or GSP for TD defence
Then again that's just me.

Shields vs. Kampman I'm thinking Kampman on this one. He's more versatile dude can pull off a Kimura out of nowhere.

Hammil over Ortiz, fight's gonna go the distance. Tito's old, Hammil lacks power.

Sanchez over Thiago vis sub.

Schaub over Gonzaga hands down.

I'm not sure about this one. Diego "Dirty" Sanchez has a few things going against him right now.

1. He's a tub at welterweight. Go find training photos/videos, he's a god damn lard ass.
2. He's too small to fight at welterweight and too short. Despite being a lard ass at 170lbs, he's still small. Go find his Hathaway fight and you'll see what the next generation welterweights look like.
3. His head is not in this game right now. Got beat by Penn so he moves up a weight class? Wrong move man, stay where you are and get better, don't run and hide. Besides, Penn is no longer champ and what were you expecting to be different if you got a title shot vs. GSP?
4. Silva is pissed after getting beat on for three rounds. Don't fuck with Brazilian Special Forces or whatever the hell he is. Don't fuck with those guys, professional fighting is nothing compared to what those tough bastards deal with.
5. Wasn't Sanchez with Ariani for a while or something? Having that and losing out to playboy would screw with me too.

I didn't specify here, but I thought it would be a first-round affair, and I was right. Lesnar IS Mark Coleman, total lack of stand-up and all. Same dominating takedowns until he gasses, too.

And everybody's picks for the others were pretty dead-on. I was surprised at the Gonzaga result, just because I wrote off Schaub after the Nelson loss. Boy, I just didn't look at Gonzaga's Cro Cop win as a "Cro Cop is done" fight as much as I should have.

It was Carwin vs. Brock with a younger more powerful dude. And the 1st rnd going right. Cain is a beast and is more technical. I was thinking the size difference was a big factor but it went down to techniques and styles. Great win.

I'm impressed with the Sanchez vs. Thiago fight. That big body slam was epic.

Best thing about the whole card was that slam from Sanchez. When he hoisted up Thiago me and two of my buddies watching all went :omg: in unison. And while I think everyone expected it I was glad to see Matt Hamill kick Tito's ass.

So on a scale of 1-10 how many people are disappointed when these matches become competitive hugging events?
