I got eight episodes in and then stopped. Sorry, Link.

The second Arc is pretty weak and like a lame "ghost story" the 3rd arc is awesome shit about child abuse.

I watched the first episode last night, and it was really, really good. I'll probably be looking over my shoulder alot the further I get in

Really, you enjoyed it? I found it really annoying and kept watching only because I knew it was a facade. An annoying facade, but still.

Episode 5:

Spoiler
Really annoyed me when the first arc ended and this episode started up like nothing was wrong and was just as annoying as the first one.

Sollah. They're self-contained arcs. If I told you about this anime I already toldja it plays out like a choose your own adventure game. There are different events that change (such as who might be a psycho this episode and who isn't) but the general basis is ALWAYS the same. The same two people ALWAYS die after the festival, and it's a crazy murder mystery story. I'm surprised you found the first arc annoying. I fucking LOVE the first arc. It's by far the creepiest IMHO, although the 3rd Arc is also really good. The 2nd arc is pretty meh, it has it's moments, but it's like a bad ghost story/slasher movie.

Anywho, each Arc is part of a GREATER story that's being told in the background (the murders and what's causing them) which is told relatively consistently throughout all the first season and then VERY directly during the second season.

I didn't find the first arc annoying, just the first episode. Once it got more serious I enjoyed it more.

Yeah, Higurashi has this WEIRD charm to it where like... it's all like... giant anime cliche tom foolery, and then you have murdering loli's the next scene. It's VERY strange. I will say that each Arc involves some twisted shit.

Arc 1 focuses on K1 (Kei-Ichi), Arc 2 focuses on Mion and the newly introduced Shion, Arc 3 focuses on Satoko and her Child Abusing Uncle. I can't remember the specifics of the other ones... one of the arcs has nothing to do with the festival murders surprisingly but only lasts an episode. Then another focuses on Rena and her life/family.

In general though, don't give up on the series. Each Arc has it's up and down moments, and it gets REALLY good when they start slowly "unveiling" stuff that has happened in previous arcs and give you a better answer to what happened. I think this occurs during the last 8 episodes or so of season 1.

I shall watch it after Hellsing. I'm not sure if you mentioned it or not, but where does the Live action movie come in the picture? Is it a standalone or has it a purpose to the story?
Yeah, it got kinda messy, I'm tired :(

The Live Action Movie is a live action version of the very first 4 episodes.
