One thing I suggest is taking the time and experimenting by making your own brushes and designs that you can use repeatedly. As for tutorials, all I can suggest is to use google. There are many tutorials out there

Brushes are fucking awesome. Any and all vector related things I do are done entirely with the pen tool. MOTHER FUCKIN' PEN TOOL!

PEN FUCKIN' TOOL!

Image

YES!

Seriously, just draw shit with the pen tool. Master that thing and you're like a god damn vector art wizard. :yo:

As for tutorials, I went to school and did that, but I suggest finding some sort of piece of artwork, and then just trying to redraw it by tracing over it with the pen tool. Shove the artwork on the bottom layer, cut the opacity to like 40-60% or whatever works for you, and then start drawing over it with the pen tool (you'll probably use multiple layers.) Just like you'd use tracing paper when you were a kid to pretend you knew how to draw shit, same concept.

Im not much help in the vector department. All the tutorials I've checked out have been for flash. And they mostly focus on the animation part. What I know about vector, I've taught myself.

I do want to ad to Link's tip about tracing though. If you're in photoshop do the 40-60% opacity thing like he said. BUT, also go into blending options on the layer you want to trace and click "color overlay". Pick a bright blue color. That way it'll be easier to tell it apart from your own lines.

Knowledge Drop: Web-Java's main driving force is the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) ... which implements things in HTML5 and Javascript with an AJAX approach. :D

Also, I don't want to be that guy but GIMPs selection/pen tools are actually substantially better than phtoshop's.

Really? I mean as far as web standars go flash is on its way out. But the Flash applications itself was/is allot of people's go to app for animation. What are people switching to instead?

Nothing yet. But HTML5 is getting built in animation support.

However, Adobe is pushing out Edge, or whatever, to utilize HTML5 and other emerging web tech to act like flash.

Also, there are OSS programs out there for, explicitly, vector imaging. InkScape is an example http://inkscape.org/. It also supports SVG (scalable vector graphics), which can be directly used in Non-IE browsers instead of flash. (Though HTML5 is a better option, now) (And if you do use GIMP and InkScape, this plugin becomes pretty useful http://registry.gimp.org/node/25049 it allows you to export layers from GIMP to SVG layers to be used in InkScape)

You can read up more on vector graphics editors here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... cs_editors goes a bit in depth.

Also, just to elaborate, yeah Illustrator IS your Vector program. Photoshop's pen tool acts like a deformed bastard child you lock away in the attic and pretend you never had, while Illustrator's pen tool is like a fucking Harvard graduate.

@Crono.
It's great that they're finally going with an open standard. Especially since they've had so many problems with security over the years (and Macromedia before them). Too bad there's not much competition in the HTML5 animation field then. This would otherwise be a great opportunity for more companies to enter a market previously dominated by Adobe.

BTW, is MS doing anything similar with SIlverlight?

Personally I've never used the application Flash to publish web content. I've always converted my stuff either to hundreds of loose animation frames (later integrated into sprite sheets) or just plain good 'ol mpegs. Out of a user perspective I believe the changes at Adobe will affect me a great deal. Out of a creators standpoint, not so much.
