Helvetica is a pretty sweet font. I don't share your passion for it, but its definitely my top five fonts. I like Lucida Grande. Maybe not as versatile as helvetica but a pretty nice font none the less.

But why is it so expensive?

It's the same thing as getting upset over someone shaking the camera around like it's amateur hour when they're trying to film something important, or getting pissed off at someone for driving like a moron (okay maybe Comic Sans isn't life threatening, but same idea.) Saying not to get upset over it is just promoting bad design, bad drivers, bad photographers, etc. It's one thing if an amateur is using Comic Sans, but even professionals manage to fuck it up. It's really all about having pride in your profession and/or talent. If you're a designer, you're going to always call people out on their bad design, maybe not be absolutely rude about it, but still, you're going to say something or suggest they do something differently.

Seeing someone use Comic Sans in a design of any sort is a lot like trying to watch your technophobic grandparents program the VCR or use a computer. It's frustrating, and you just want to be like "Get the fuck out of the way Grandpa, tell me what you want to do and I'll do it for you. It shouldn't take 10 minutes to fucking google something!"

ITT: Design nerds.
Arial and Times New Roman work fine for me. I don't know what the problem is.
Also, using Arial prevents a $500 loss for a similar font.

I see what you mean. It's frustrating to designers because of the reasons you pointed out but to the rest of us it's not a big deal. Just amateurs that don't know when to use comic sans. I think we can all agree that the font itself isn't a bad one.

Arial is a default substitute for Helvetica. Not too versatile but it works, lacks the condensed styles and the proper thickness but that's just me. I'm picky with fonts....like coffee picky.

To be honest, if you all consider yourselves designers you should already know that you don't design for specific fonts ... but classes. :p

I despise Comic Sans. As Link says it makes your work, ad, Business sign very unprofessional and amateurish. It's also how I'll discriminate against anyone who uses Windows Movie Maker.
