I've always liked the ps3 just never had the chance to buy it. Recently I've been looking at prices but when it comes to games I'm conflicted. What could I get for ps3 that I can't play on my Xbox 360 or that I don't already own for 360?

So you pro PS3 people I need some pushers to help show me the plus and minus's to actually owning this system. Some assistence would be most grateful. : )

True but what games in particular? What exactly will wow me besides metal gear solid?

Uncharted 1-3 ... seriously some of the best games to come out in the last ten years, regardless of platform.

These aren't all the games worth playing on the system (that are only on PS3), but they're definitely ones worth owning:

God of War 3 - A substantial improvement over God of War 1 and 2. They didn't fix the broken combat mechanics ... but they expanded the abilities and mechancis to complete remove the issues. The enemies are insane, the game feels like what God of War 1 should have been ... at least to me.
Heavy Rain - This is sort of the modern evolution of the adventure game. It's not for everyone, but the game tells a powerful narrative that feels like an interactive and dynamic film, and in the best way possible.
Infamous 1 and 2 - I'll be honest, if you just go look these games up ... they look boring and contrived. I thought they were going to be very average ... but then I actually took the time to play them ... and they're fantastic. They certainly have a more "this is just a world to stage stuff in not a world to play in" aspect to them ... but the game's are really good.
3D Dot Game Heroes - It's a modern homage to Zelda and NES RPGs, if you enjoy those games, you'll love this one.
Demon's Soul - You could skip this and just go straight to Dark Souls, of course, but, they're actually not a series. This is the game people flipped their shit over. And it's ludicrously hard.
Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time - Just like with ever R&C game ... in the main series ... these vastly improve and expand on the systems they presented in previous games ... and the production value shot through the roof.
Sly Cooper Collection - These are the only legit remakes on PS3 part of all those "HD re-release remake" collections out there. The games have been entirely revamped.
Valkyria Chronicles - This is a pretty unique sRPG with real-time combat. It's also ludicrously gorgeous.

The best part is ... all of these games are rather cheap, outside Uncharted 3, just because it's new. And I wouldn't underestimate the uncharted games, I'd argue they're the best new franchise from this generation of consoles, without a doubt.

PSN also has some titles to check out:

Dead Nation - Feels pretty unique, the coop is fairly strategic for a dual stick shooter.
Fat Princess - The game is a straight forward class based CTF game ... but it's just ludicrously fun. The different classes are pretty unique and the way they can expand through the match is interesting.
Flower - It's technically a game and technically isn't ... but one thing is for sure, it's wonderful. The game is ... you're a pedal blowing in the wind. Sounds silly, but it's very nice.
Journey - Isn't out yet, it's by the people who made Flower, an expansion in their "narrative and instruction through the interaction with the environment" design philosophy. It's sort of like a exploration platformer with dynamic coop.
PixelJunk Shooter and Shooter 2 - Straight up dual stick shooters. But there's a narrative level progression and lots of boss fights. This is also coop.
PixelJunk Sidescroller - This is a little too similar to their shooter series, but this is a straight up shoot-em-up game. Horizontal style. It's pretty awesome.

And, there's actually demos for everything.

All modern PS3s are BC to PS1 ... but not PS2.

I use my PS3 to play BluRays all the time ... It's also my main netflix device ... and DLNA client.

Uncharted. The only problem with the series is ... 2 and 3 are on an ENTIRELY different level than 1 ... but 1 is a ridiculously good game (far above average standards, even now) And it's sort of a disservice to it to play like 2 (the best one) then go back, it'll just seem like shit in comparison, even though 1 is still a stellar game.

But, you can't go wrong with Uncharted, unless you don't like things that ooze awesomeness. The series is sort of like the ultimate culmination of everything that's come before in platforming, adventure, and action games. It's a series of games that probably couldn't exist before now. Tomb Raider was sort of the architect of the way it plays ... but Uncharted it substantially better for a few reasons: namely the mechanics actually work and you have interesting characters too. Win-win.

Infamous is good stuff and it's pretty long ... in a good way. The game also unfolds in very distinct ways depending on the dichotomy choices you make. It is good or bad ... but the alterations are pretty staggering. It changes what characters live, what powers you get, and even various points of the narrative.

Ratchet and Clank are great. It just depends on how OCD you are about playing them in order ... considering the main 2 on PS3 are games four and five.

God of War 3 is just ludicrous crazy action. The strong-suit of the game is easily the fact that the bosses you're fighting are entire set-pieces. It just gets insane to a degree the previous 2 games couldn't dream of.

I'd say that's about it. Realistically R&C, Uncharted, and GoW games aren't really that long. I mean, if you played all three Uncharted games, both R&C, and GoW3, you're looking at like 60-70 hours of SP (though Uncharted 2 and 3 have full online coop and vs) Infamous though ... I think I put in a solid 40 hours into that game for my first playthrough. I guess it just depends on what you're play style is.

Also, the resistance and killzone titles are actually pretty good, I didn't list them, because it's just like ... oh 5 more FPS ... yeah thanks. But They're not bad. I think actually Killzone 2 and 3 are pretty unique in many aspects. They're also all very cheap. I think I bought Resistance 1 for like $6. CHEAP.

Anyway, your first purchase should be you going out the door this instant to buy Uncharted. Your second purchase should be infamous or uncharted 2 :P

Is it worth getting now though? Are there any plans from Sony to make a new system in the next year or so?

Honestly, I don't think Sony is going to talk about new hardware until 2013 at the earliest and even then it might be a 2 years out deal (which would actually put the next system out to 2014-2015 land).

The PS3 is FINALLY selling well and picking up plenty of steam ... and the releases coming out for it just keep increasing in quality. Nothing really feels tapped out about the hardware and it really doesn't look like anyone has come close to full utilization of the machine.

The Price of the console is still, relatively, high. Not compared to it's launch price, but in general. It's $250 for a non-bundled version. If the console was hitting $100-200 land ... then yeah it'd be hitting it's final year being alone on shelves. But PS3 isn't doing that.

I know they're not saying anything this year ... they're likely focusing on strengthening PS3 and getting Vitas out the door. Talking about new hardware when you're trying to sell current hardware would just cannibalize your sales and they're not going to do that.

So I'd say you have at least a year before they officially talk PS4. And I doubt it'll come out in 2013 if they do.
Just like I'm pretty confident Nintendo isn't going to talk about redesigning the 3DS this year ... I'm very confident Sony won't talk about a new console ... it just wouldn't make any sense (in either case). Both would cannibalize their current markets when they're still young.

And, there's no guarantee a PS4 would even play PS3 games and these games are absolutely worth playing.

Also, how did I forget about LitteBigPlanet.

In vita news is it only for mortal kombat and COD? At least that's what the commercials have been showing me lately, I'm a big Mortal Kombat fan lol

I LOVE Mortal Kombat. MKT + Crono <3

Anyway, as far as I know the best game on Vita is the very watered down Uncharted on it (not a port of any kind it's a new game) and this other whatever game. I think they're gonna try to sell it with FPS ... but ... I don't think people are going to like them too much ... I know on the PSP ... trying to use face buttons and the shoulder buttons was, to put it mildly, uncomfortable. And on the Vita the distance is even larger now. So I can't imagine using the analog stick and shoulder button to fire ... and the rear touch pad is, apparently, pretty sensitive.

More MK is always good, though, even if it's just a portable port.

I imagine some pretty stellar titles are coming for Vita ... I just can't warrant buying one of those things myself until the price comes down and the battery life goes WAY up ... also the mandatory purchase of a memory card that doesn't come with the system pisses me off, they did that with PSP too AND it's proprietary. OF course it is. It's Sony.

MK9 makes my hands hurt :| I need to get a stick to play that (but they're ludicrously expensive)

I'm not sure what's coming out actually ... I know there's The Last of Us, which is Naughty Dog's newest game and The Last Guardian (No relation) ... but I'll have to look some stuff up ...

Makai Wars (:O) The fabled sequel to Makai Kingdom
Dragon's Crown which is made by Vanillaware ... large breasted women aside, it looks pretty awesome. Same developer who made Grim Grimoire, Odin Sphere, and Muramasa. Seems to be their idea of a beat-em-up (awesome)
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - It's not made by Sucker Punch ... but it is by the dudes who did the Sly Cooper collection. It's, finally, Sly 4.
StarHawk - Successor to WarHawk, but everything looks like it works this time.
Ni No Kuni - The first game Studio Ghibli has done all art assets for! It looks immaculate.

There's a new Tales game ... that has no release outside of Japan scheduled :\

Then there's games that have been in limbo but not canceled that everyone thinks will come out soon ... like Agent and Final Fantasy Versus XIII (they released a direct sequel ... which apparently is Final Fantasy's thing now ... before releasing this game that was announced at the same time as XIII.)

Apparently God of War 4 is rumored too ... but have no idea what the quality is like. I tend not to get excited for those games until I can get my hands on it ... they're very hit or miss for me.

I wouldn't say Uncharted Golden Abyss is watered down. It is more of a throwback to the first game in the series, taking it back to the jungles but has a different vibe since there are more puzzles. It looks and plays just like it's PS3 cousins and it is a launch title, that blows my mind.

I was also really impressed with the Unit 13 demo which controlled really good using the shoulder buttons to fire and a couple touch screen commands. So if you are looking to do a shooter on a handheld the Vita seems more than up to the task with the dual sticks, buttons, triggers, and heads up touch icons if needed.

Battery life isn't too bad either. It is already way better than the 3DS, which considering the kind of graphics and multitasking the Vita does is pretty impressive. There is already a portable charger available if you plan to do some marathon gaming sessions on a regular basis.

Well Crono hit everything dead on pretty much.

Uncharted 2 IMO is the best game on the system hands down. Don't get me wrong, 3's good, 1 to me was meh (won't go down that road again) but 2 is one of my favorite games ever.

Besides that, like he said, God of War III is an amazing hack and slasher with some of the most amazing boss battles I've ever encountered. 3D Dot Gameheroes is... my god I love that game. Best Zelda game since A Link to the Past and more people need to play it. The new MK is awesome too. I said it before, and I'll say it again, fuck Street Fighter and other Capcom fighters the new Mortal Kombat is the best fighter from this generation. Fun multiplayer (although I'm terrible online when it comes to fighters), BEST single player story in a fighting game ever and the challenge tower just keeps you coming back.

And like Crono said as well, the infamous games are damn awesome as well. I like 2 more than 1 but both are well worth your time. In the long run the PS3 will be around longer than the other systems in this generation and the first-party games are by far the best out of the 3 (after a very rough start). I want to get Twisted Metal so bad but I don't have the time nor money to play it.

Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted 2 were worth it for me. Heavy Rain was an interesting experience and LittleBigPlanet is very fun if you have 3 other people to play it with.

MGS4 is great to but my god... so many cinematics. Glad I played it while I was on vacation as it took forever with watching all the in-game movies.

Also, Modnation Racers is awesome. Races like Mario Kart 64 (the best of the Mario Kart games IMO) with the customization of Little Big Planet.

I personally really enjoyed the PS3, but like Crono said, the Uncharted series needs to be play. And like he said, don't play 2 then 1, because 1 is a phenomenal game, but 2 literally improved everything from 1 to make it substantially better. This isn't knocking on 1 at all, but they just went all out in improving the formula for 1.

inFamous is also an awesome game and you'll get a lot of replayability out of it because of the choices and the combat is really fun.

Aside from PS3 games, the PSN Store has a whole slew of PS1 games for great prices, most of them being at $6, with some exceptions like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid (both at $10).
