No, fucking Geohot started this whole mess by opening pandora's box with his Jailbreak bullshit and ruining it for everybody else. Fucking 'very nice gay man', I wanna punt his 4'0" sorry ass. Because of him now alot of people are losing a shitload of money. Granted the hackers of the PSN are just as guilty too and I hope to see them behind bars, but I wish to see Geohot behind my fucking fist with my Black Lantern Ring with a rusty nail driven through it!

This makes no sense. I mean, I guess because Anonymous hacked PSN somebody else decided to hack PSN more seriously but... that's a dumb person to blame.

We don't even know why the hacker hit the PSN. At this point it just seems they were out for greed or wanted to be annoying.

While GeoHot is an idiot, I am not going to blame him directly for anything. At this point the only thing he is guilty of is putting the PS key online which was illegal. Which was resolved. People move on. He was guilty of his own crap but he can't be held accountable for what someone else does.

So. The reports that were made earlier (which I also commented on) that Sony took PSN down due to people putting in imaginary funds into their wallets is not true (not that people weren't doing that, that's just not why PSN was taken down, it was just a stipulation at the time).

What happened was a 100% frontal assault on the PSN servers. This has NOTHING to do with the PS3 root key. Hotz didn't open any sort of Pandora's Box because people were already pissed off at Sony's nonsense before the whole root key junk. This was an organized attack on their service. Plain and simple. The fact that security forensics still don't know who attacked the servers, is a bit of evidence of that.

To naively claim that, because some guy hacked around the PS3 firmware and found a number made another entity launch an assault on a network ... is just ridiculous.

They're simply not connected. Would the attack have happened if the stuff with Hotz never happened? I don't know, but I do know that the root key being known has nothing to do with it (especially considering that Sony has written around it and released one or two updates since then making the Root Key useless)

But just go ahead and continue to ignore facts, that seems to work for a lot of people.

I'd also like to point out that, many people make a very clear distinction between hacking and cracking. Hacking, in general, is not malicious at all, it's purely knowledge driven. Like finding the root key, or making hardware do something better than it was meant to. Cracking, is about getting personal data, or breaking security software ... not to break it, but to get past it.

Everyone just calls everything "hacking" as a general term and there's been a large movement to separate what the terms mean. Hacking is more or less digital tinkering, where cracking is more or less digital bomb making.

with what crono said is very true. i can only confirm this because i know of one person in my area that is into that.
seems like you didn't read that link fully or even explored it completely so allow me to copy paste for your pleasure.
Edit #2: Mathieulh just mentioned that he has been in contact with someone that has official access to the SCE devnet servers and it was posted to them today that only 3.60+ debug firmwares will be allowed on the dev network anymore. All earlier versions will be cut. If you want to retain your access you need to contact Sony and upgrade to 3.60 debug firmware.

Edit #3: Ok, it looks like some various news sites have picked up this story and taken it out of context. Once again, this is all speculation and information gathered from various devs in the PS3 scene. It might very well not be the real reason PSN is down, but as the timeline fits, it's a reasonable explanation. Now, as to Rebug directly allowing this to happen, that's not the case at all. Different CFW's have had access to the dev network the whole time. This is not new news for people in the PS3 scene. It's what people have figured out what to do with the said network that has caused all the recent issues. Saying that Rebug is what did this is like saying a gun manufacturer is responsible for every death that happens with a gun.

Edit #4: Looks like Sony is finally admitting that people have been able to get into their network and users personal info has possibly be compromised. See: Official Sony Blog for the latest update.

Edit #5: Last edit folks. The whole story is unfolding over at PSX-Scene Looks like the data was unencrypted, and hackers are currently taking the highest bidder for the data (2.2mil CC#'s w/ first name, last name, address, etc) after trying to sell it back to Sony.
http://psx-scene.com/forums/cmps_index.php <the whole thing so far

there is no mention to geohot at all upon deeper reading you WILL find out that the major security flaw was on sony's side. before the whole geohot in court thing took off there was talks about the issue and sony was just dumb to not listen.
if you still dont see it irc log right here
http://psx-scene.com/forums/attachments ... irclog.txt

another thing to gab on and on about.
the PSP have you played it lately?
cuz i have and with the latest firmware update too.

I PS Plus that thing where if you download stuff for free with it and your sub ends that free stuff you downloaded with it stops working? Including PSOne classics? If so then I probably won't use it for anything other than discounts.

So your free PSOne classics you get with your sub will work no matter what, even if your sub ends?

If that's the case I hope to fucking lord they got Suikoden II on the PSN by the time this mess is cleaned up.

I want the execution of the hacker assholes who did this to be streamed for free on PSN. I am pretty psyched its coming back online soon... and we get free stuff too!

But seriously, I've read tons of articles and I'm still not clear what this is about. All I was able to understand was that Sony doesn't want people modding it's system and some hackers were like, "we'll show you Sony! You don't think we're responsible or trusted enough to mod our own systems? Well, take this!" so they illegally hacked Sony and stole a bunch of information. Way to go, assholes... you sure showed Sony that people are mature and responsible enough to be trusted to mod systems and not pirate or steal.

I hate people.

I never had PS Plus

however I have never heard of you not being able to play games you downloaded as long as the profile is tired to the account that downloaded them. Even with the PSN down I could play any game including PsOne classics aside from online stuff

So Sony today announced that credit card information, aside from security codes, from a 2007 database were stolen

only accounts outside the US were hit

Funny thing is that this came from them searching SOE servers, aside from PSN severs, for more on the attack and found this out. Even though its from 2007 its still a kick in the nuts for sony. They cant catch a break and I am really starting to feel sorry for them a little. Regardless of their shit security, fuck the hackers(the bad ones. not the ones who just mod their systems for fun. the guys who steal shit are the bad ones) who hacked them. World would be better off without them wasting precious space

Well anything from 2007 should be most of the time completely useless, but if they had your other information its not out of the ball park that they could find out more on you

And the accounts outside American only pertain to the 2007 database, which was supposedly encrypted regardless. This does not mean any other information was non-US only, just that one database of outdated numbers

if they did get my name , my address ( which would be from a few years ago , not where i live now ) , my phone number or my birth day what is the worst they could do? just try some sort of phishing scam? I mean they would need your SSN to do anything hardcore I would imagine.

Don't ever say that again. It's extremely offensive. (Jihad is religious duty involving struggle. It's only been recently bastardized into "holy war")

one part I am curious about.

Quote:
Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

they recommend putting a fraud alert on your credit report if you may have had your info stolen from SoE, is that really necessary since most of the information stolen was public info anyways?
