The nightmare parts sucked for the first like 2 or 3, then I got the hang of it and it wasn't nearly as bad. They even added a few "checkpoints" just in case I sucked it up. They're definitely the worst part of the game, but they definitely do a good job of the "fear" element. If you don't have a good sense of direction you're royally fucked. Also, at one point there's like a "lost woods" sort of bullshit confusing maze that I had to watch a youtube video about (or maybe just read a forum topic I can't remember) trying to figure out what the deal was and what I was doing wrong.

Well I calmed down enough to keep playing and I finished the game early this morning. And I still pretty much don't like the game.

The nightmare parts did get kind of better, or maybe I just got better at them. But really this game hardly felt like a SH game at all. I know it's a "reimagining" not a "remake" but really compared to the original this game pales in comparison. I found the story at the end to be...lame. The SH has gone downhill yet I honestly can say I enjoyed Origins and Homecoming more than this game, and I felt both of those were "meh".

Perhaps if they had just made this a side story and not used the same characters (sort of) from the original, I might have liked it slighltly more, but I kind of doubt it. Overall, it's just not very good as a SH game.

Honestly, I thought the best parts of the game were the exploration and psychology stuff (although the game was VERY insistent that my character was an alcoholic because of maybe one or two accidental choices I made, so the "psychological" part of it wasn't as engaging for me.) I think it did a really good job in that regard, the nightmare stuff sucked though. I think this would have been a much better game if they kept the exploration and worked in some sort of "fear meter" like in the Dreamcast game Illbleed, where you could die if you got too scared. Just keep the exploration part but also have a few "traps" here and there to spook you.

Because, ultimately, if it wasn't nightmare world you had nothing to ever fear. So, while exploration was creepy, in a "meta-gamer" sense, you knew the rules of the game, and you knew that you had nothing to fear once you left nightmare world. This has sort of inspired me to make a topic regarding the survival horror genre so... I'm gonna go do that now.

I've had my eye on this one for a while, but if it's not that scary...

What the hell. I'll probably pick it up, anyway. Sounds like something I would enjoy.
