So sick of arguing with inexperienced fanboys as to why Bioshock sucks total ass.
Not being an experienced System Shock player or anything, I'd have to say that from a story perspective Bioshock was really well crafted, so it deserves a lot of the accolades it gets. As for gameplay... 'eh, it's kind of basic, but gameplay was never really what I cared about with Bioshock, it was the imagination and the world and exploration that made it great. Even Bioshock 2's multiplayer, while tacked on, at least made a slight effort to involve some sort of vague plot/story into it as opposed to "DEATHMATCH! KILL EVERYONE!" this.
it was the atmosphere and level design of bioshock that did it for me. of course the story was very well done and was done in the same style as half life where the story is carried on through the actual game play and doesn't bore you with long cut scenes. I also thought the game play was cool. I enjoyed messing about with different plasmids to see what kind of effect they had. It's funny to see dipshits that are eager to jump on the band wagon and say that bioshock sucks ass and they're arguments are always the same. I have never played the game system shock which is good for me because then I don't have to compare these two games and I can judge bioshock on it's own qualities. I haven't played bioshock 2 and I probably won't, but I am very excited for Bioshock Infinite.
See, for me, the atmosphere was constantly killed by the respawning baddies everywhere. There wasn't enough variety in the enemies (yes, re-skin the big daddy and consider him a "new" enemy). The story was basically taken from System Shock, they just changed some characters around and set it underwater. Even the twist was pretty much identical, and I could see it coming from a mile away. The style and most of the atmosphere was straight out of the original fallout games. I mean, everyone boasts about Bioshock's originality, but if you've been a gamer for longer than 5 years, you know there really isn't much originality in that game. The AI was terrible (could kill a big daddy with a wrench), and even if you had difficulty with the game there were too many respawn points, which neutralized any difficulty you may have had. It also made it damn near impossible for me to be immersed, and wrecked any type of horror aspect the game was going for (i know it wasn't a horror game, but it was definitely going for creepy). Don't even get me started on the hacking, that was horrible. There was no inventory system, and becuase of that upgrading weapons was boring.
Worst of all, even if you ignore all the problems above,
it was not fun to kill things. I got no satisfaction from shooting or killing anything in that game. The shooting mechanic felt weird, and it basically became work to beat it. I felt no need to use anything but electricity and a wrench, there really was no point in having all the other weapons, and none of them were fun to use aside from the plasma gun. I don't see what everyone was raving about, System Shock 2 is almost 10 years older and is still a better game to this day (especially if you get the graphic packs).
The thing that really did it for me in Deadspace was how ridiculously fun it was to sluaghter the necromorphs. Taking limbs off was incredibly satisfying and the atmosphere was even better. So not only was it fun to play, and had a great story, the atmosphere was way better, and creepier. The monsters had way more variety, and the different weapons actually came into play depending on what you were fighting. It had more creative boss battles, and the enemy AI was actually pretty decent. Fuck Bioshock.
