I finished Metal Gear Solid 4 and I have a lot of thoughts about it and how it wraps up the story.
Right off the bat, it's my least favorite Metal Gear Solid. However, that's not really fair to the game because Metal Gear Solid 1-3 as a whole are probably in my top 5 games and Metal Gear Solid 4 still is a phenomenal game. What worked well was the weapon and controls system, which gave me a lot of customization on my loadout. It was a nice touch, but I personally still stuck to the silencer and sniper rifle for most of the game, with the machine gun as my go to heavy weapon. I still preferred the older system, but I will agree that it's more accessible to newcomer. Second, the combat is great and really fun. I really enjoyed how the game lets you either go crazy and shoot everything that moves or take a more tactical route and incorporate stealth. And last, the bosses were pretty good but nowhere near as memorable as the Cobras or Foxhound. The final fight, though, was perfect and the music playing was just perfect. I still would have preferred if it was a young Solid Snake fighting, but eh, I'll get to that later.
Storywise, I'm mixed. And I really can't talk about it without making major spoilers, so:
However, that aside, the game is phenomenal. I may prefer the older games, but this game does do justice to the series and offers some amazing action with some great looking cutscenes, which I didn't mind, lengthwise (beats the hour long Codec and cutscene in MGS 2). Overall, the MGS series have been some of the best games I've played and from an objective point of view, Snake Eater is easily the best one, but personally I love 1-3 equally. And I was originally sad to see the series end, until MGS 5 was announced which I'm really excited to hear more from.
