Some of the discussion this week was pretty interesting, bird mang kept asking 'why do they keep making girls get naked' well..the answer is obviously to sell copies, not saying that's right or good, but that's the reason why.

I was sorta surprised when lara croft/samus came up more wasn't made of the fact that these 'heroines' are also incredibly sexualised, especially lara croft with her huge breasts and skimpy outfit. Does this undermine their position as powerful female characters? does it send out a message that to be a powerful female you have to also be a sex symbol?...or is it empowering for females to be kicking ass and looking sexy at the same time?

well these questions all came up in my mind

I think a good example (not mentioned) is that female from half life 2, I haven't played the game but I read about her, she does not wear skimpy clothes, she's very witty/funny, and is just a great example in modern gaming of a THINKING woman

also surely some of those final fantasy games deal with female issues....

I personally think this is a problem related to the arts as an industry, it is still an industry dominated by males, when you look at movies almost all the most acclaimed directors are male, thus you get more masculine centered films, it's hard for females to break into the industry due to gender politics, it's basically because many men wouldn't like being ordered around by a female, it's sad to say that such problems still exist but they do, even sex and the city was directed by a male!
The same exists in the world of videogames. It's a sociological thing as much as anything else.

To extend on from the movie point...many would say 'oh but you get chick flicks' but the point is those films often depict women in quite a simplistic way, films like sex and the city/bridget jones being purely relationship based movies about obtaining a male partner, and so such movies still don't show women in the rich complexity that they deserve. I see this in videogames too with games like super princess peach where the female takes the lead but..the whole point of the game is how overly emotional peach is which I found a bit offensive.

I think it's important to note that this isn't JUST about women breaking through the ranks, we need male artists/visionaries who are already in the industry to realise that a more in depth representation of a female would aid the game, the novel anna karrenina by leo tolstory is one of the most in depth portrayals of a female I've ever experienced and it was written be a male, also shakespeare presented some of the most witty/clever females, so it's just about getting the right sorts of people on board who are creative enough to not just go for the 'sex sells' mentality.'

I think we have seen a good start with the already mentioned half life 2, legend of zelda is a great one....zelda kicks ass but of course the question of her dressing up as a MALE to do this raises questions (seriously I could ramble forever) so I'll stop now!

I think you mean Film industry, there are a lot of very well known and well to do female artists.

you had a very good point about how the discussion fell flat, it was also interesting how they didnt bring up one of the most recent games depicting females, which is MGS4.

I actually will probably stand alone to say that I did not like this episode/show. I am probably jaded because I have ventured out and started listening to many other podcasts, but I just didnt enjoy the feel of this one.

(I am going to sound overly critical, and its not to be outright vicious or mean, its just the impression I got)

The podcast's tone seems like a recorded polite phone call between HT and BT (and no I am not addressing the audio quality with that). But that isn't what kills it for me...

Whenever I detect a bit of a bias or some kind of media sway, I reject everything beyond that point. This started with BMT's visit to MS X08. Everything he played was "F*cking awesome" with the same inflection for everything, even when there was a negative point, it still ended with "Great game." And there was only one negative view, and that was with MK vs DC.

The most difficult thing to do with a retro-recorded podcast is news. It's impossible to deliver "breaking news" but when the story is on something that has been covered in a GH podcast, it just seems sloppy. I am talking about the Chrono Trigger DS story. When the story is so old that it was reported on ANOTHER retro-recorded podcast (the game heroes) that this one is affiliated with is weak.

If you love boobs, then sex being sold with games should make sense...that doesn't make it right but it should be a 2 + 2= 4 thing. And BMT championed women to get out there and rise above the sexism, but when he was talking about customizing an old woman, it was "an old woman with saggy boobs" not a cane, not a Sunday hat or whatever. I mean in the Freudian sense, that is the EXACT thing that barricades women in the conscious sense from being on the same level as men.

There is potential somewhere for this podcast, but I dunno..

JB, I'll agree this was not our strongest episode and I totally get you feel that way. I also agree with you as well.

Truthfully, I should have had more up to date stories and I did'nt and well I should have and will do more to make sure that issue is addressed. I get so busy that things fall by the wayside at times and that's not fair to any of my listeners be it on TWIG or GH. I'm committed to doing what I can to make it right.

It's feedback like this that makes me see the strengths and weaknesses as they stand these are encouraged. We build a better show from what you the community feel about us.

So JB, I sincerely thank you for bringing your feelings out and this will help us make a better show.

Sincerely I appreciate that :)

Thanks, bro.

I'm glad you hear where I'm coming from, like in the first quarter of the show you said "fucking" seven times. That's a little excessive. (I'm not exactly sure how many more you might say, but I personally would like it if you just toned it down all together.)

Yeah, it's my freedom and I am abusing and I thank you for acknowledging that
I'm not the AVGN, I should stick to my usual wittier banter :)

This gives me a reason to bring up my game to a new level :)

'Bout damn time we got that kind of princess.

The Game Dame is my kind of princess, if you know what I mean.*

Hey Birdman/captain awesome/ Mike

Was just thinking that there was a woman fairly high up the command line in Ubisoft. Or at least I think there was, I'll admit to being a lazy bastard and not trying very hard to confirm it, though I seem to recall she did a lot of the videos for Assassins creed when they were hyping it up.

Surely More Tom would suffice. I think the fact the Birdman is more experienced is showing through at the moment probably because he actually works in radio of sorts.

I agree though, more Tom, come one man speak up more. I am liking the podcast so far good work guys. Also Loving the Game dame, you should definitely have her back as a guest.

Well I hear your concern for sure and want to address this,
So, I bring this up with Tom during the next conference call tomorrow night.

However this all being said, we are doing what we can to find our groove and there will be ups and downs.
I am glad that the community is here with us to help us grow and be with us during this time.

I am very glad that Tom asked me to be apart of the show and bring my experience as a radio broadcaster and producer to the show and so far,its been so much fun and really look forward to being a game hero for quite sometime.

Still, Keep the feedback coming!

If there needed to be more of anyone in this most recent episode specifically it would be the Game Dame. Now I'm not sure if she fealt overwhelmed by Birdman or Tom, or maybe she just didn't have a whole lot to say but it seemed like she only spoke more than a couple sentences just a few times during the whole segment.

Maybe in the future instead of just throwing out a general question that anyone could hop onto and answer, you could direct questions specifically at the guests and let them really say their peice before adding any comments.

Other than that one problem with the new episode I'm really liking the show.
