I'm tripping on Anime acid as of last month, netflixing and hunting down dvds of anime movies (OVAs count too).

So here's a list of what I've already got and watched the past month or so.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars ( I've made a thread about it)
The Grave of the Fireflies (fuuuuuuuuuuu)
    Akira
    The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi

I watched and rewatched a bunch of Miyazaki flicks too
    Spirited Away
    Mononoke Hime
    Kiki's Delivery Service
    Ponyo
    Howl's moving Castle

all pretty good movies
At the moment I'm looking for "5 Centimeters Per Second" I'm hearing tear jerking reviews. That and Paprika.

So, wanna help a dude out? What movies do you guys recommend? No Pokemon or Digimon or anything like that please O_O.

Every single damn anime by Satoshi Kon, TV Series included just 'cuz...

Tokyo Godfathers
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress

Also, obligatory '80s/'90s anime movies

Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D & VHD: Bloodlust
Ghost in the Shell
Akira (just mentioning since it's part of the same category.)
Macross
Macross Plus OVAs/Movie
Tenchi Muyo! In Love
Robotech: The Untold Story

TV Series Converted to Movie Format (only reccomending if you don't plan on watching the TV series.)

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Movies (there are two of them Laughing Man and then Individual Eleven, and then a third that acts as a finale for the TV series.)
Death Note (There are 2 movie versions, forget what they're called.)

Ninja Scroll sucked.

I hear those new EVA flicks are worth watching, though.

You're a terrible person.

That is essential '90s Anime watching goodness. It might not be the most enlightened plot, but it's the quintessential action anime movie.

Most anything by Myazaki is awesome.

Nasicaa and the Valley of the Wind.
My Neighbor Totoro
Porko Rosso

I liked Escaflowne the movie a lot and never watched the TV show.

they're not movies, but Samurai Champloo and Tri-Gun are awesome.

And Ninja Scroll is great.

I like the part where the main character had no role in the "story" till the big "twist" at the end.

Man, why are you so bitter about Ninja Scroll? What the heck were you expecting from it aside from violence and ninjas?

Actually I was expecting something pretty good at doing both of those things.

I saw it last year and it's a pretty funny and campy watch, but that's about all it is. There really isn't anything good in it that hasn't been done way better elsewhere, even around the time it was made. It's okay but in no way a needed watch or a major classic.

Really? Because Ninja Scroll seemed to be about one of the few ninja based movies available in the states throughout the '90s as far as I could tell. Yoshiaki Kawajiri was pretty much the go to guy for "we need cool violent shit in an anime", as he was also responsible for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Wicked City. When I think '90s anime, Ninja Scroll is probably one of the first things I think about. It defined an era, for better or worse (much like Liefeld defined the '90s of comics.)

Except it didn't.

Companies would pick up any OVA they could already and the OVA market was already going when Ninja Scroll came along. It actually hasn't had much an impact, just a lot of nostalgia around it.

I'm speaking more so that it defined the Western Market for anime by filling the "violent cartoons with nudity" cliche. Which was pretty much a majority of whatever Manga could get their hands on and dub as far as I could tell. That being said, I still think it's one of the more widely circulated and watched anime during the '90s, there wasn't a single video rental store that didn't carry Ninja Scroll (baseless assumption aside from me always hearing people talking about it whenever I'd mention anime.) Akira did a fuck ton more for the industry by a longshot, especially in the art department.

I can't think of any anime movies similar to Ninja Scroll from the '90s. At least in terms of stuff that was released in the states.

I totally dig the uber violence shizzle like Ninja Scroll and whatnot, I even watch some Berzerk and Basilisk.
The theme I'm exploring right now is the 'slice of life' genre. But those movies are on my netflix queue now.

Just got done watching "5 Centimeters per Secons" good movie...good movie.

Karas The Prophecy and Karas The Revelation. It's an OVA that you can get as two movies, roughly and an and a half long each. Amazing animation, great voice work and music, superb story and characters and awesome action:

Here's the opening few minutes:

Funny story; not actually movies.

Karas was an OVA series that was packed as two "movies" in the states, it's why the first film just sort of stops in the middle of a major scene.

OVAs are close enough to movies at times though to not make a huge deal of it, as long as the OVA length is around 2 - 4 episodes long I'd consider it a movie, depending on OVA length.
