I went to sell these 5 PS1 games, which were like in new condition, because I already had all but 1 on my PSN.

and they only offered me $14 (store credit) for all 5. Ok I know they need to make a profit but really? When they sell FF8 for $45, or FF6 for the SNES for $100? I know this would be expected from a game store, maybe I was expecting $15-20 a piece for these at the least, but $14 store credit for all of them? Thats a big rip off compared to what they sell them for. Even GameStop isn't that dirty. No wonder this store only gets real business in the holiday season. Stupid 3D games.

Yeah, I work at a game store but the highest we offer for classic games is 5 bucks, and we let people know that. Some don't want to go through the hassle of selling it on the internet or finding a collector, so they sell it to us.

But, from the games you mentioned, I can tell you that we would only sell Final Fantasy VIII and IX for $7.99 and offer anywhere from $2.50 to $3.00 each. Chrono Cross would get you about $3.00 too. Around $5.00 for Legend of Dragoon depending on where it's selling at on the internet (actually, that game fluctuates quite a bit in value. Some days it sells easy at $40, some days you can't even move it for $15).

The only real catch of the bunch is Grandia. That's an Ebay item... the rest, meh in terms of value. But, if you were to come into my store, I can tell you we'd give $19.00 straight cash or $26.60 store credit... but we'd probably recommend you sell Grandia on the internet cause we're nice like that.

It's funny, cause we let people know when they have gold they're unknowingly trading into us, but they tend to do it anyway just because they don't want to deal with the hassle of selling on Ebay or Amazon or they just want the cash now.

you know it wasn't entirely just what they were offering for them, but its the fact I can turn around and see them selling FF7 for $60 and FF8 for like $40, and they look me in the eye and offer $14 in store credit for all of them. I wouldn't be mad if they were not gonna make 1000+% profit from it lol. I usually just walk away saying "ok, not worth it," but the amount they sell them back to customers for made me angry

Yeah, that is ridiculous. There's a place by me which only sells old games... Chrono Trigger at $60 (which is about right) but Turtles in Time for $40, Link to the Past for $50, Castlevania IV for $50, Super Metroid for $60... it makes me sad because I know they'll find a sucker who'll pay that. Plus, they actually pay out worse than that store you were ragging on. I pretended to be a layman to games and brought in a bag of a dozen of so SNES games I said my brother gave me. Here's what was in the bag that was worth noting:

3D Games has huge markups on popular and "rare" games. If you are looking for at the $5-$10 range stuff that seems to be priced right but anything over $20 there is a rip.

Sell them online or just hang onto them. Some real classics there, that are worth way more than $14.

by any chance was the name of said game store "Play N Trade"? because i remember i bought VP on the ps1 from them and the case was in shit condition and came with no manual but the discs seemed to be in great condition. i played for a while and then came across an unloadable area and spent like 3 days with them to try to figure it out.
they / we couldn't get it to work and i wound up getting store credit for it. so now i had like 100$ in store credit! the manager was that cool about it. something about because when i bought it i got a protection plan and someone screwed up and gave a ps1 game protection plan when its not supposed to have it. granted though it was for a return since the only time i ever traded in anything was all my GBA games.
trading in games is NOT COOL because you spend all this money on em and expect to at least get some of the money back but wind up getting like 3 bucks or less per game. its 'very nice overweight gay man'

The best used retro game stores are the ones where old video games are not their primary focus. For example, I went to a Disc Replay in Crest Hill, Il. I traded in NES Castlevania, Super Mario Bros. (GBA NES Classic Series), a few DVDs and a couple CDs. For that trade in, I got Worms Armageddon N64, 5 common to not so common NES games, and a NES dogbone controller (all in mint condition). It was a pretty awesome store with a ton of rare games for reasonable prices. The thing is, their business is mostly for CDs and DVDs so you can talk them down on games or even make trade deals, like I did. I go there all the time now. Got my eye on an RE4 chainsaw controller

Play N Trade is pretty much awful.

Almost a year ago, I went into one of their stores here in St. Louis because I was taking a class for my job near them. Their selection was paltry at best. They only had like 20 SNES games and they all were so much more expensive than I normally see them. I was only in for like 10 minutes and I was able to check out their entire selection.

After some thorough searching, I was able to find a handful of good game stores. 'The Game Trader' & 'Trade N Games' are locally own and have the best selections/prices. I also have a bunch of Slackers and now a Vintage Stock is moving into my area. Add Amazon and I really have no need to ever take a step into Gamestop.

The best used game stores are locally own and are owned by people that know their stuff. They are the most fair and they usually have the best selection.

Play-N-Trade is the worst when it comes to fixing game consoles. I took my PS3 in last year because it yellow-lighted and it took them a almost 3 months (they said it would be fixed in a little over a month) because the guy that normally fixed them stopped doing it so they started in house. They finally fixed it and it yellow-lighted again 45 days later. Brought it back, waited another month or two (labor and repair was free this time) and this time it lasted about 60 days.

I'm not bringing it back to them. I'm better off buying a new PS3 instead of having one that is problematic and no one to properly fix it.
