But I have to side with Tom, shooters stories are mostly terrible. If the game is linear like Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty etc. then I typically find myself getting very, very bored with the single player and just want it to end. No matter how "good" the story is (and I mostly find them extremely meh anyways) if there's no gameplay hook and it's just "Go here, shoot things, move on" then it just doesn't interest me. Halo and Gears are both EXTREMELY boring I find. Using the same weapons in every game and just moving down one shootout to another. Want a good shooter'ish with a good story with great set pieces? Uncharted 2 and 3. Way better than any Halo or Gears title and a really well written story (less so in Uncharted 3). Only reason I stick with Call of Duty is the multiplayer. Shooters really need to evolve their gameplay as I'm really finding myself less interested with each passing year.
